Sensex slips 129 points, Nifty ends at 11,073; RIL declines 2%


The domestic stock market ended Friday’s volatile session in the negative territory, weighed down by heavyweights Reliance Industries (RIL) and the HDFC twins. Weak global markets following disappointing US gross domestic product (GDP) data, too, dented investor sentiment.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended 129 points or 0.34 per cent lower at 37,607 while the Nifty50 index gave up the 11,100-mark to settle at 11,073, down 29 points or 0.26 per cent. India VIX declined nearly 3 per cent to 24 levels.

On a weekly basis, Sensex fell 1.36 per cent while NSE’s Nifty slipped 1 per cent.

Among individual stocks, shares of RIL ended 2 per cent lower at Rs 2,067 apiece on the BSE after the company reported a profit before tax (PBT) of Rs 8,542 crore against Rs 14,366 crore reported during the same quarter last year. The company’s net profit, however, rose about 31 per cent to Rs 13,233 crore against Rs 10,104 crore in the same quarter last year.

State Bank of India (SBI) ended over 2.6 per cent up at Rs 191.45 after the lender posted 36.8 cent rise in profit before tax (PBT) at Rs 5,559.7 crore for the quarter ended June 2020 (Q1FY21) on robust growth in net interest income.

The sectoral trend on the NSE was mixed. While pharma, PSU banks, and realty counters advanced, auto and private banks ended flat with negative bias. Nifty Pharma index gained the most – up 3.6 per cent to 11,148.90 levels.

In the broader market, the Nifty Smallcap 100 index gained over 0.8 per cent to 5,011 while the Nifty Midcap 100 closed 0.4 per cent higher at 15,471 points.

Sensex trims losses, ends 12 points down; Nifty closes at 11194


The Indian stock market ended Friday’s volatile session on a flat note with negative bias led by selling in financial, auto, and metal counters. However, Reliance Industries (RIL) and IT stocks gave much-needed support.

The S&P BSE Sensex today ended at 38,129, down 12 points or 0.03 per cent while NSE’s Nifty ended 21 points or 0.19 per cent lower at 11,194 points.

Of 30 stocks on Sensex, 23 declined and the rest 7 advanced. HCL Tech (up over 4 per cent) ended as the top gainer on the index, followed by RIL (up 4 per cent) and Tech Mahindra (up over 3 per cent). On the flip side, Axis Bank (down over 3 per cent) emerged as the biggest loser.

During the day, the index hit a high and low of 38,235.73 and 37,748.41, respectively.

On a weekly basis, Sensex rallied 3 per cent while Nifty gained 2.68 per cent.

Among individual stocks, Reliance Industries continued to soar and hit a new high of Rs 2,162.80 on the BSE. The market capitalisation of the company breached Rs 14 trillion today. The stock ended at Rs 2,146, up over 4 per cent on the BSE.

Shares of Mphasis jumped over 14 per cent to Rs 1,118.70 on the BSE after the company’s April-June quarter (Q1FY21) earnings came in-line with Street estimate. Besides, signing of new deal worth $216 million deal in July 2020, in addition to the Q1 TCV declared wins worth $259 million, boosted sentiment.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index slipped 0.6 per cent to 13,702.55 while the S&P BSE SmallCap ended at 12,967, down 0.23 per cent.

On the sectoral front, barring Nifty IT, all the other indices ended in the red. Nifty Bank declined 422 points or 1.83 per cent to 22,662 while Nifty Metal slipped over 2 per cent to 2,087.50 levels. Nifty IT, on the other hand, gained 1.4 per cent to 17,286 levels.

Sensex slips 143 points amid weak global cues; financials decline


The Indian stock market ended Friday’s volatile session in the negative territory amid weak global cues. The relentless rise in Covid-19 cases both in India as well as on the global front weighed on investor sentiment. The S&P BSE Sensex slipped 143 points or 0.39 per cent to settle at 36,594 levels while NSE’s Nifty ended at 10,768, down 45 points or 0.42 per cent.

HDFC, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank contributed the most to the Sensex’s fall. Axis Bank ended as the top loser on the index while Reliance Industries (RIL) ended as the biggest gainer – up around 3 per cent. RIL hit a fresh lifetime high of Rs 1,884.40 during the day before settling at Rs 1,878.50 on the BSE.

On a weekly basis, Sensex gained 1.6 per cent while Nifty rose 1.5 per cent.

The sectoral trends on the NSE remained mixed. While financials, metals and auto stocks declined in the trade, pharma, FMCG, and realty counters rallied. The Nifty Pharma gained 0.85 per cent to 10,072.25 levels. On the other hand, Nifty Bank slipped over 2 per cent to 22,398.45 points.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index fell 0.72 per cent while the S&P BSE SmallCap index declined 0.35 per cent.

IT stocks, HDFC Bank, RIL help Sensex settle 329 points higher


Rally in information technology (IT) stocks, HDFC Bank, and Reliance Industries (RIL) helped the benchmark index, S&P BSE Sensex, settle with 329 points or 0.94 per cent gains at 35,171 levels on Friday.

NSE’s Nifty rallied 94 points or 0.91 per cent to end at 10,383. Volatility index, India VIX, dropped over 4 per cent to 28.50 levels.

IT stocks advanced in the trade after Accenture posted a better than expected quarterly numbers. The S&P BSE Information Technology index jumped over 5 per cent to end at 15,125 levels. Among individual stocks, Infosys gained 7 per cent, TCS rose 5 per cent while Wipro ended over 3 per cent higher. READ MORE

On a weekly basis, Sensex gained 1.26 per cent while Nifty added 1.35 per cent.

The broader indices underperformed the benchmarks. The S&P BSE MidCap index ended 0.27 per cent higher at 13,258.44 levels while the S&P BSE SmallCap rose 0.19 per cent to 12,630 points.

Sensex gains 307 points as financials, metals rally; Nifty PSU Bank jumps 7%


After a one day blip, equity market once again edged higher on Friday, led by buying in financial, metal and auto stocks. PSU bank stocks advanced the most in trade after state-owned lender, State Bank of India, posted a net profit of Rs 3,581 crore for the March quarter of FY20 (Q4FY20). The profit grew 326.93 per cent from Rs 838 crore clocked in the year-ago quarter (Q4FY19). Sequentially, the profit declined by 35.85 per cent.

The S&P BSE Sensex gained 307 points or 0.9 per cent to settle at 34,287.24 while NSE’s Nifty ended at 10,142.15, up 113 points or 1.13 per cent. Volatility index, India VIX, slipped dropped nearly 4 per cent to 28.51 levels.

On a weekly basis, Sensex rallied 5.7 per cent and Nifty added 5.86 per cent.

On the sectoral front, the Nifty PSU Bank index gained around 7 per cent to 1,386.75 levels with all the 13 constituents advancing. Nifty Metal index rallied nearly 4 per cent to 2,049.70 levels. On the other hand, Nifty FMCG was the only index that ended in the red. The index settled 0.27 per cent lower at 29,542 levels.

In the broader market, both the mid and smallcap indices outperformed the benchmarks. The S&P BSE MidCap index climbed 1.8 per cent to 12,554.16 while the S&P BSE SmallCap index surged 2.51 per cent to 11,855 levels.

Indices end flat, Sensex slips 25 points; financials, autos fall


After remaining range-bound for the most part of the session, benchmark indices turned highly volatile in the last hour of the trade on Friday with the indices briefly swinging into positive territory, before settling flat with negative bias. Except for metal stocks, selling was witnessed across the board.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 31,098, down 25 points or 0.08 per cent. Of 30 constituents, 20 declined and 10 advanced. Mahindra & Mahindra (down around 5 per cent) ended as the top loser on the index while telecom major Bharti Airtel (up nearly 3 per cent) was the biggest gainer.

ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, and Infosys contributed the most to the index’s loss.

On the NSE, Nifty ended at 9,137, down 6 points or 0.06 per cent.

Sensex surges 1,266 points, Nifty ends at 9,112; auto stocks jump


The domestic equity market ended with over 4 per cent gains on Thursday, in line with global peers that gained on hopes that the coronavirus pandemic was nearing its peak globally. That apart, hopes of more stimulus measures by the government also kept the investor sentiment upbeat.

The S&P BSE Sensex jumped 1,266 points or 4.23 per cent to settle at 31,160 amid heavy buying in index heavyweights such as HDFC, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries (RIL), and Maruti. NSE’s Nifty reclaimed the crucial 9,000 levels to end at 9,112, up 363 points or 4 per cent.

On a weekly basis, both Sensex and Nifty added around 13 per cent.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index ended over 3.63 per cent higher at 11,374 and the S&P BSE SmallCap index added over 3 per cent to 10,294.

On the sectoral front, all the indices on the NSE ended in the green with the Nifty Auto index jumping over 10.5 per cent to 5,569 levels. Volatility index India VIX declined over 5 per cent to 49.56 levels.

Among individual stocks, Sun Pharma regained the market-capitalisation of Rs 1 trillion after a sharp rally in its stock price. The stock ended at Rs 455.20 on the BSE, up over 4 per cent.

Shares of Cipla jumped 16 per cent at Rs 595, also its 52-week high on the BSE after the drug firm received United States Food and Drug Administration’s (USFDA) nod for the first generic Proventil HFA (albuterol sulfate) metered-dose inhaler, used for conditions such as asthma. It ended at Rs 579.50, up 13 per cent.

Sensex ends 1,325 points up as indices stage sharpest 1-day recovery


Indian equity markets ended an eventful and highly volatile session with significant gains on Friday after posting a record intra-day recovery as investors put aside worries over coronavirus spread and indulged in some bargain buying. The Nifty50 index was locked in 10 per cent lower circuit early morning, prompting a halt in trading for 45 minutes. However, once the markets re-opened, the headline indices Sensex and Nifty shot up as much as 5,381 points and 1,604 points, respectively, from their early morning lows. Volitality index surged over 24 per cent during the session.

Sensex closed 1,325 pts, or 4.04 per cent, higher at 34,103 and the Nifty50 index a tad above 10,000 level at 10,023.65, up 433 points, or 4.54 per cent. The rebound was led by banks with index heavyweights HDFC ending 10 per cent lower while State Bank of India zoomed 14 per cent. Reliance Industries was also up over 5 per cent. In the end, 27 out of the 30 Sensex constituents ended the session in green.

The broader markets also joined the benchmarks in the upmove. The S&P BSE MidCap index closed 258 points, or 2.09 per cent, higher and the S&P BSE SmallCap index gained 146 points, or 1.26 per cent.

On a weekly basis, however, the Sensex posted worst week in over a decade — down 11.35 per cent while the Nifty50 slipped 11.6 per cent for the week.

Indices end at 6-month lows, Sensex tanks 894 points; YES Bank down 56%


Bears continued to be in the driver’s seat on Friday as markets witnessed another bout of across-the-board sell-off due to Coronavirus fears. Further, YES Bank crisis was another major factor that dragged the markets lower.

The S&P BSE Sensex tanked 894 points or 2.32 per cent to settle the day at 37,577. During the day, the index hit a low of 37,011 levels. Bajaj Auto emerged as the biggest gainer on the index while Tata Steel (down over 6.5 per cent) was the top loser.

On NSE, the broader Nifty50 index ended at 10,989, down 279.5 points or 2.48 per cent.

On a weekly basis, Sensex dropped 1.8 per cent while Nifty lost 1.89 per cent.

Among individual stocks, YES Bank cracked as much as 85 per cent during the day after RBI suspended the bank’s board and placed it under moratorium for 30 days and capped withdrawal limit to Rs 50,000 for the one-month period. The stock eventually settled at Rs 16, down 56 per cent.

State Bank of India (SBI) closed around 6.5 per cent lower at Rs 270, after it informed that its board has given in-principle approval to consider an “investment opportunity” in YES Bank. In a late night statement on Thursday, SBI, however, said no decision had yet been taken to pick up stake in the bank.

Besides, other banking stocks, too, tumbled in the trade. The Nifty Bank index ended at 27,781, down over 1,000 points or 3.6 per cent.

Volatility index India VIX rose around 12 per cent to 25.96 levels.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index declined 343.5 points or over 2 per cent to 14,227 levels while the S&P BSE SmallCap index ended at 13,330, down 261.5 points or around 2 per cent.

Indices snap 3-day losing streak, Sensex up 411 points; PSBs gain


Snapping three-day losing streak, buying sentiment was back at D-Street with benchmark indices edging a per cent higher on Friday lifted by gains in financial counters.

The S&P BSE Sensex gained 411.38 points, or 1 per cent, to close at 41,575.14 level, with Axis Bank (up 3 per cent), Power Grid (2.2 per cent), SBI (2 per cent), and Bharti Airtel (1.89 per cent) settling as the top gainers on the index. On the flipside, UltraTech Cement (0.22 per cent), and Titan (0.17 per cent) were the top drags.

On the NSE, the Nifty50 ended 124.15 points, or 1.02 per cent highet at 12,250.70-mark.

The Sensex and Nifty50 hit an intra-day high/low of 41,611.27/41,264.92 and 12,258.45/12,157.90, respectively.

On the sectoral front, all the key indices on the NSE settled the day in the positive territory. Nifty PSU Bank index was the best performing index, up 3 per cent, at close, followed by gains in Nifty Realty index (1.6 per cent), and Nifty Bank index (1.3 per cent).

The broader markets, too, followed headlines indices with the S&P BSE mid and small-cap indices gaining 0.86 per cent each.
