Fag-end buying lifts Sensex 114 points, Nifty above 18,100; Metal index up 4%


The key benchmark indices ended a rather listless trading session near the high’s of the day on the back of smart gains in metals and select financial shares.

The S&P BSE Sensex languished in the negative zone for the major part of the trading day, but eventually ended 114 points higher at 60,950 owing to the late buying. The NSE Nifty 50 settled with a gain of 64 points at 18,117.

Among the Sensex 30 shares, Bajaj Finserv surged 4.5 per cent to Rs 1,801. Tata Steel and UltraTech Cement vaulted 2.5 per cent each. SBI, Reliance Industries, Asian Paints and Bajaj Finance were the other major gainers.

On the other hand, Dr.Reddy’s slipped 1.5 per cent. Hindustan Unilever, Infosys and HDFC Bank were the other notable losers.

The broader market, however, ended on a mixed note. The NSE Midcap index was down 0.3 per cent, while the Smallcap index added 0.4 per cent. India VIX declined 1.8 per cent on Friday.

Sectorally, the NSE Metal index surged over 4 per cent. The PSU Bank and Media indices were up a per cent each. The Pharma index, however, slipped a per cent.

Sensex surges 548 points amid broad-based buying; Nifty ends above 10,900


The Indian stock market ended 1.5 per cent higher on Friday, led by buying in Reliance Industries (RIL), HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and HUL.

The S&P BSE Sensex settled 548 points or 1.5 per cent higher at 37,020 levels. Of 30 constituents, 25 advanced and the rest five declined. ONGC (up 5.5 per cent) ended as the biggest gainer on the index while TCS (down around 1.5 per cent) was the biggest loser. NSE’s Nifty advanced 162 points or 1.5 per cent to end at 10,902. Meanwhile, the volatility index, India VIX, slipped 5.4 per cent to 23.99 levels.

On a weekly basis, Sensex gained 1.16 per cent while Nifty added 1.24 per cent.

Sectorally, barring Nifty IT index, all the other indices ended in the positive territory. Nifty PSU Bank index rose 1.83 per cent to 1,431.60 levels while the Nifty Bank ended 1.7 per cent higher at 21,967 points. Nifty IT, on the other hand, slipped 0.62 per cent to 16,821 levels.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap gained 1.55 per cent while the S&P BSE SmallCap rose 1.11 per cent.

Sensex recovers 1,433 points from day’s low, ends 243 points higher


It was a topsy-turvy session for the domestic equity market on Friday. After tumbling over 3.5 per cent in the early deals, the benchmark indices made a sharp comeback to end 0.7 per cent higher.

The S&P BSE Sensex witnessed 1,508-point swing during the day before settling at 33,781 points, up 243 points or 0.72 per cent. Of 30 constituents, 17 advanced and 13 declined.

NSE’s Nifty ended at 9,973, up 71 points or 0.72 per cent.

On a weekly basis, Sensex slipped 1.47 per cent while Nifty shed 1.66 per cent.

Volatility index, India VIX, jumped nearly 4 per cent to 30.82 levels.

Among individual stocks, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) ended over 7 per cent higher at Rs 508.70 apiece on the BSE after the company reported a consolidated loss of Rs 3,255 crore for the March quarter of 2019-20 (Q4FY20), which it attributed to “impairment provision for certain long-term investments”.

Financial stocks bounced back 13 per cent from the day’s low on the BSE after the Supreme Court gave three days to Finance Ministry, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to decide on moratorium period interest.

Reliance Industries (RIL) ended over 3 per cent higher at Rs 1,588.80. Its partly paid-up rights shares are set to debut on the bourses on Monday, June 15.

On the sectoral front, barring IT and media stocks, all the other sectoral indices on the NSE ended in the green. The Nifty IT index declined nearly 1.5 per cent to 14,403 levels after media reports said the US President Donald Trump is considering suspending a number of employment visas including the H-1B, most sought-after among Indian IT professionals, in view of the massive unemployment in America due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In the broader market, the Nifty SmallCap 100 index ended at 4,393.50, down 0.11 per cent and the Nifty Midcap 100 index rallied over a per cent to 14,339.35 points.

Sensex gains 307 points as financials, metals rally; Nifty PSU Bank jumps 7%


After a one day blip, equity market once again edged higher on Friday, led by buying in financial, metal and auto stocks. PSU bank stocks advanced the most in trade after state-owned lender, State Bank of India, posted a net profit of Rs 3,581 crore for the March quarter of FY20 (Q4FY20). The profit grew 326.93 per cent from Rs 838 crore clocked in the year-ago quarter (Q4FY19). Sequentially, the profit declined by 35.85 per cent.

The S&P BSE Sensex gained 307 points or 0.9 per cent to settle at 34,287.24 while NSE’s Nifty ended at 10,142.15, up 113 points or 1.13 per cent. Volatility index, India VIX, slipped dropped nearly 4 per cent to 28.51 levels.

On a weekly basis, Sensex rallied 5.7 per cent and Nifty added 5.86 per cent.

On the sectoral front, the Nifty PSU Bank index gained around 7 per cent to 1,386.75 levels with all the 13 constituents advancing. Nifty Metal index rallied nearly 4 per cent to 2,049.70 levels. On the other hand, Nifty FMCG was the only index that ended in the red. The index settled 0.27 per cent lower at 29,542 levels.

In the broader market, both the mid and smallcap indices outperformed the benchmarks. The S&P BSE MidCap index climbed 1.8 per cent to 12,554.16 while the S&P BSE SmallCap index surged 2.51 per cent to 11,855 levels.

Sensex tanks 190 points, Nifty below 12K ahead of Budget


Investors were up for a volatile trading session on Friday as expectations from the Union Budget 2020-21, and December quarter earnings kept investors jittery. That apart, concerns over the outbreak of Coronavirus, too, weighed on investor sentiment.

Markets closed at their lowest level in 2020 ahead of the Budget presentation tomorrow. The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex ended the day near day’s low, at 40,723 level, down 190 points or 0.47 per cent, while the Nifty50 breached below the crucial 12,000-mark and settled at 11,962 level, down 74 points or 0.61 per cent.

During the day, the Sensex and Nifty fell 483 and 158 points, respectively from the day’s high.

In the broader markets, the S&P BSE mid-cap index closed at 15,463.46 level, down 0.6 per cent, while the S&P BSE small-cap index was at 14,671.53, down 0.22 per cent.

Most domestic and foreign brokerages are looking forward to credible steps to prop-up growth and provide some relief to the individual income-tax payers when the government tables the Union Budget on Feb 1.

In the Economy Survey tabled today in the Parliament, the government said it expects a pick-up in economic activity in the second half of the fiscal on the back of improved foreign direct investment flows, a build-up of demand pressure, positive outlook for rural consumption, and rebound of industrial activity.

Sensex up 247 points, Nifty holds 11,300; IT, metals advance


Some brisk buying in industry heavyweights such as Infosys, HDFC, ICICI Bank, Hindustan Unilever (HUL), and Bharti Airtel helped benchmark indices settle with decent gains on Friday. Additionally, positive global cues, too, boosted investor sentiment.

The S&P BSE Sensex added 247 points or 0.65 per cent to end at 38,127.08 levels, with Infosys (up 4 per cent) being the top gainer and YES Bank (down over 3 per cent) the biggest loser. During the session, the index hit a high and low of 38,345.41 and 37,737.85, respectively.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index ended at 13,780.99 levels, up 33 points or 0.24 per cent and the S&P BSE SmallCap gained 49 points or 0.38 per cent to close at 12,772.07.

On the NSE, the headline index Nifty50 ended at 11,301.25 levels, up 67 points or 0.59 per cent.

Sectorally, barring media and private bank, all the indices on the NSE ended in the green. The Nifty Metal index ended at 2,335.20 levels, up 2.27 per cent.

Sensex ends 248 points lower on weak global cues


Markets on Friday ended lower, amid weak global cues, as investors booked profits after sharp gains in the previous session which lifted the benchmarks to 18-month highs. Further, testing of a nuclear weapon by North Korea also dampened sentiment for riskier assets.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended down by 248 points at 28,797 and the Nifty50 slipped 86 points to settle at 8,867. In the broader markets, BSE Midcap and the Smallcap indices eased between 0.5%-1% each. Market breadth ended weak with 1604 losers and 1146 gainers on the BSE.
