Sensex soars 900 points, Nifty ends near 17,600; PSBs, Adani Group stocks sizzle


Domestic markets rallied smartly in trades on Friday, as positive global cues coupled with the Rs 15,446 crore stake buy by GQG Partners in Adani Group boosted sentiment. The Group shares along with PSU Banks and select index heavyweights were the major gainers.

The S&P BSE Sensex soared to a high of 59,967, and ended with a gain of 900 points at 59,809. In the process, the BSE benchmark was up 345 points for the week.

The NSE Nifty 50 touched a high of 17,645, before signing-off at 17,594 – up 272 points. The Nifty was up 128 points for the week.

The positive sentiment had a spillover effect on PSU Banks. The Nifty PSU Bank index soared 5.4 per cent to 3,970. UCO Bank and Union Bank galloped over 8 per cent each. Maharashtra Bank, Punjab & Sind Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Bank of India and Indian Bank rallied over 6 per cent each. SBI and Canara Bank vaulted over 5 per cent each.

Sensex, Nifty end flat after choppy day; Titan up 5%, Varroc Engg tanks 7%


Equity markets were volatile on Friday, swinging rapidly during the day, as every bargain buying witnessed selling pressure on the top. The S&P BSE Sensex hit a high of 58,269, and a low of 57,851 during the day before closing at 58,191. It slipped 31 points, or 0.05 percent, compared to Thursday’s close.

The NSE Nifty50, on the other hand, shut shop at 17,315, down 17 points or 0.1 percent. The benchmark indices were weighed down by energy, IT, FMCG, and financial stocks with Tata Consumer Products, M&M, Coal India, BPCL, SBI, TCS, JSW Steel, Adani Ports, HCL Tech, and ITC being the top laggards. On the upside, Titan Company, IndusInd Bank, PowerGrid, Grasim, and Maruti Suzuki trimmed losses, rising over 1 percent each.

In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap index fell 0.15 percent, while the BSE SmallCap index added 0.3 percent.

The rupee weakened to a new low against the US dollar on Friday as Federal Reserve officials in the US outlined a large quantum of rate hikes going ahead, leading to a stronger greenback globally. The rupee, which weakened past the 82 per dollar mark for the first time, hit a low of 82.42 per dollar during the day. Its previous low was 81.95 per dollar. Meanwhile, yields on 10-year government bonds were back above 7.5 percent during the day.

IPO Market was buzzing with the three-day issue of Electronics Mart India, the consumer durables company was subscribed 62 times till 3:30 PM. The QIB portion subscribed at 138 times, NII at 60.4 times, and Retail at 19 times.

Sensex adds 462 points; Nifty tad below 15,700; auto, banks gain; IT slips


Benchmark indices traded within a narrow range on Friday seeking support from firm global cues. The S&P BSE Sensex closed 462 points, or 0.88 per cent, higher at 52,728. The Nifty50, meanwhile, ended at 15,699, up 143 points or 0.92 per cent.

Auto, banking, and FMCG stocks took the centre stage today as easing commodity prices eased input cost and credit off-take pressures. M&M, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finance, Hero MotoCorp, HUL, ICICI Bank, Britannia Industries, ONGC, Shree Cement, JSW Steel, Eicher Motors, Tata Consumer Products, Hindalco, and HDFC Bank rose between 1.5 per cent and 4.4 per cent to settle as top Nifty gainers.

On the downside, Tech M, Infosys, Apollo Hospitals, TCS, NTPC, HCL Tech, and Coal India ended as top laggards.

Meanwhile, in the broader market, the Nifty MidCap and SmallCap indices advanced 1.4 per cent and 1.76 per cent, respectively.

Indices end lower for 2nd day; Sensex drops 441 points but up 2.5% this week


Domestic markets snapped the streak of weekly losses even as sombre global mood butchered bulls at the bourses for two days straight. A rise in Brent crude prices along with a jump in bond yields acted as the double whammy on stocks on Friday, pushing benchmark equity indices down by nearly a per cent. However, a tilt towards defensives towards the fag-end of the session lifted markets off-lows.

Among headline indices, the S&P BSE Sensex ended at 50,405 levels today, erasing 441 points or 0.87 per cent. From the day’s high of 50,886, the index tumbled 726 points to hit a low of 50,160. Financial, pharma, and IT counters were the top drags on the index today with IndusInd Bank, State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, HCL Tech, Bajaj Finserv, Infosys, Dr Reddy’s Labs, Sun Pharma, and HDFC leading the list of losers. All these stocks were down in the range of 1.7 per cent to 5 per cent.

On the upside, ONGC, Maruti Suzuki, Nestle India, Titan, Reliance Industries, and L&T supported the markets with up to 2.5 per cent gains.

On the NSE, the Nifty50 settled above the 14,900-mark at 14,938, down 143 points or 0.95 per cent. 38 of the 50 stocks declined on the Nifty today, while 12 advanced.

All the sectoral indices were painted red amid across-the-board sell-off. The Nifty PSU index plunged 4 per cent on the NSE, followed by the Nifty Metal index (down 3 per cent), and the Nifty IT and Realty indices (down 2 per cent each). The Nifty Bank, Auto, FMCG, and Financial Services indices slipped between 0.5 per cent and 1.7 per cent.

In the broader markets, the S&P BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices dropped 1.9 per cent and 1.5 per cent, respectively.

The overall market breadth favoured bears with 1,904 stocks ending the day in the red, compared with around 1,083 stocks that advanced on the BSE.

Sensex ends at day’s low, down 746 points ; Bajaj Auto jumps 11%; RIL down 2%


Investors took some profit off the table on Friday after markets scaled historic levels a day before, when the S&P BSE Sensex surpassing the 50,000-mark for the first time. That said, investors rewarded stocks of the firms that delivered strong Q3FY21 results.

In the intra-day trade, the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex plunged 790 points and hit a low of 48,835 levels. The index settled around day’s low level of 48,878 levels, down 746 points or 1.5 per cent. Financial bore the maximum brunt with Axis Bank declining 4.4 per cent on the Sensex, followed by SBI (3.5 per cent), ICICI Bank (3.7 per cent), and IndusInd Bank (3.5 per cent).

On the flipside, Bajaj Auto, HUL, TCS, Ultratech Cement, and Bajaj Finserv were the only gainers on the Sensex.

On the NSE, the Nifty50 settled at 14,372 levels, down 218 points or 1.5 per cent.

The broader markets, however, fared slightly better. The S&P BSE MidCap index ended 1.1 per cent lower at 18,777.46 levels while the S&P BSE SmallCap index closed at 18,442 levels, down 0.93 per cent.

Sectorally, most of the key indices settled lower. The Nifty Metal index underperformed the benchmark and closed 4 per cent lower. Among individual stocks, SAIL fell 14 per cent, JSPL slipped 8 per cent, and Hindustan Copper declined over 4 per cent.

That apart, Nifty Bank index tanked over 1,000 points, or 3.25 per cent, to close at 31,176 levels.

Sensex ends 255 points higher; financial, metal stocks advance


The domestic stock market regained some lost ground on Friday, a day after benchmark indices tumbled around 2.5 per cent. The S&P BSE Sensex ended 255 points, or 0.64 per cent higher at 39,983 levels, thanks to healthy buying in the financial counters. NSE’s Nifty ended at 11,762 levels, up 82 points, or 0.7 per cent. India VIX declined nearly 2 per cent to 21.64 levels.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index gained 1 per cent to 14,621 points while the S&P BSE SmallCap index settled nearly 1 per cent higher at 14,787 levels.

Shares of IDBI Bank surged 18% on government stake sale plan report. The government currently owns a 47.11 per cent stake in IDBI Bank. In January 2019, Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) completed the acquisition of 51 per cent controlling stake in the lender. The state-owned life insurer infused Rs. 21,624 crore into the bank.

Shares of steel companies were in demand on Friday, rallying by up to 6 per cent on the BSE on the expectation of demand recovery. JSW Steel advanced 6 per cent to Rs 308, hitting a fresh 52-week high on the BSE. The stock surpassed its previous high of Rs 298 touched on October 9, 2020. Tata Steel, Jindal Steel and Power and Steel Authority of India (SAIL), on the other hand, were up 3 per cent to 6 per cent on the BSE.

Sensex jumps 629 points on broad-based buying; Nifty Bank up 3.7%


The benchmark indices ended over 1.5 per cent higher on Thursday amid across-the-board buying.

Among headline indices, the S&P BSE Sensex ended 629 points, or 1.65 per cent higher at 38,697 levels while the Nifty50 index topped the 11,400-mark to settle at 11,417, up 1.5 per cent. The volatility index, India VIX, slipped nearly 6.5 per cent to 18.27 levels.

IndusInd Bank (up over 12 per cent) and Bajaj Finance (up over 5 per cent) were the top Sensex gainers, followed by Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, and Tech Mahindra (all up 4 per cent).

On a weekly basis, Sensex gained 3.4 per cent while Nifty added 3.3 per cent. The markets will remain closed on Friday (October 2) on account of Gandhi Jayanti.

The trend among Nifty sectoral indices was positive, led by Nifty Private Bank index, up over 4 per cent. The Nifty Bank index rallied 3.7 per cent to 22,246 levels.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index ended 0.73 per cent higher at 14,813 levels while the S&P BSE SmallCap index ended at 14,970, up 0.69 per cent.

Sensex gains 307 points as financials, metals rally; Nifty PSU Bank jumps 7%


After a one day blip, equity market once again edged higher on Friday, led by buying in financial, metal and auto stocks. PSU bank stocks advanced the most in trade after state-owned lender, State Bank of India, posted a net profit of Rs 3,581 crore for the March quarter of FY20 (Q4FY20). The profit grew 326.93 per cent from Rs 838 crore clocked in the year-ago quarter (Q4FY19). Sequentially, the profit declined by 35.85 per cent.

The S&P BSE Sensex gained 307 points or 0.9 per cent to settle at 34,287.24 while NSE’s Nifty ended at 10,142.15, up 113 points or 1.13 per cent. Volatility index, India VIX, slipped dropped nearly 4 per cent to 28.51 levels.

On a weekly basis, Sensex rallied 5.7 per cent and Nifty added 5.86 per cent.

On the sectoral front, the Nifty PSU Bank index gained around 7 per cent to 1,386.75 levels with all the 13 constituents advancing. Nifty Metal index rallied nearly 4 per cent to 2,049.70 levels. On the other hand, Nifty FMCG was the only index that ended in the red. The index settled 0.27 per cent lower at 29,542 levels.

In the broader market, both the mid and smallcap indices outperformed the benchmarks. The S&P BSE MidCap index climbed 1.8 per cent to 12,554.16 while the S&P BSE SmallCap index surged 2.51 per cent to 11,855 levels.

Sensex dips 162 points on US-Iran tensions; PSBs, Autos top drags


Following the global sell-off, Indian equity markets, too, settled lower on Friday after US military killed Iran Revolutionary Guards’ commander Qasem Soleimani in a surprise air-strike. The middle-east tensions sent Brent Crude Futures soaring, while market sentiment turned sour at D-Street.

Brent crude futures jumped nearly $3 on Friday after a US air strike in Baghdad killed top Iranian and Iraqi military commanders, sparking concerns of disruption to Middle East oil supplies. At 3:10 pm, Brent Crude Futures were at $68.62 per barrel-mark, up 3.5 per cent.

The S&P BSE Sensex, which hit an intra-day low of 41,348.68, recovered slightly in the fag-end of the session and settled 162.03 points, or 0.39 per cent, lower at 41,464.61 level. 20 of the 30 constituents ending the day in the red. Oil-linked stocks, such as paints, aviation, oil-marketing companies (OMCs), and financial counters remained under pressure.

In the intra-day trade, Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), for instance, declined 2.9 per cent each on the BSE. Reliance Industries, Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL), and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), too, slumped up to 0.7 per cent.

On the NSE, the Nifty50 lost 55.50 points, or 0.45 per cent, to settle at 12,226.65-mark. Sectorally, Nifty PSU Bank index slipped the most, down 2 per cent at close. Besides, Nifty Bank, Auto, Private Bank indices slipped over 1 per cent. On the upside, Nifty IT index advanced 1.3 per cent on the back of a weaker rupee.

In the broader market, small-caps traded in the green territory, while mid-caps followed benchmarks. The S&P BSE mid-cap index was down 0.44 per cent, while the S&P BSE small-cap index was up 0.01 per cent at close.
