Sensex sinks 398 points, Nifty below 16,950 as STT hike, global cues weigh


Equity markets turned sharply lower at the fag-end of the session as investors digested amendments to Finance Bill, 2023. Besides, selling in US index futures and European markets also weighed on the sentiment.

Back home, under the Bill approved by the Parliament, the debt mutual fund (Debt MF) investors will no longer receive the long-term capital gain tax benefit. They will be taxed like bank deposits. It will be applicable from April 1.

The Centre also hiked the securities transaction tax (STT) on the sale of future and option contracts by up to 25 per cent.

The S&P BSE Sensex closed 398 points, or 0.69 per cent, lower at 57,527 levels, while the Nifty50 shut shop at 16,945, down 132 points or 0.77 per cent.

The broad-based selling was led by metal, PSU banks, and realty indices, which were down over 2 per cent each. Individually, Bajaj Finserv (down 4 per cent), Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports, Hindalco, Bajaj Finance, ONGC, Hero MotoCorp, Tata Steel, Coal India. Titan, HDFC Life, Reliance Industries, M&M, JSW Steel, Maruti Suzuki, and L&T.

In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices declined around 1.4 per cent each.

Sensex dips 124 points, smallcaps shine; Paytm cracks 9%, Tata Motors up 2%


It was a lacklustre session for the markets on Friday as lack of fresh triggers kept indices within a narrow range. The S&P BSE Sensex fell 123.5 points, or 0.2 per cent, to settle at 60,682.7 levels today amid profit booking in HCL Tech (down 2.7 per cent), Tata Steel, Reliance Industries, Wipro, ITC, ICICI Bank, Infosys, and HUL.

The Nifty50, meanwhile, closed at 17,857, down 37 points or 0.2 per cent. In the broader markets, the BSE SmallCap indices outshone its peers by rising 0.48 per cent. The BSE MidCap index settled flat with a positive bias.

Among individual shares, shares of Gautam Adani group companies continued to reel under pressure Adani Green Energy, Adani Transmission and Adani Total Gas hitting their respective 52-week lows on the BSE in Friday’s intra-day trade.

Besides, shares of digital financial services firm One97 Communications, which owns Paytm, slipped 9 per cent to Rs 640 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in Friday’s intra-day trade on the back of heavy volumes.

Sectorally, the Nifty Metal index slipped 2 per cent, while the Nifty Realty index gained 1.36 per cent.

Sensex sheds 237 points dragged by HUL, RIL, Infosys; Nifty ends below 18,050


Equity markets ended Friday’s choppy trade with nominal cuts pulled down by losses in select heavyweights such as Reliance(1 per cent), HUL( 4 per cent), Asian Paints (3 per cent) and Infosys (1 per cent).

The BSE Sensex closed 237 points lower at 60,622 after it touched an intra-day high of 61,001. The NSE Nifty reached the day’s high of 18,145 before fizzling out gains and closing 80 points down at 18,028.

The other top frontline drags included Bajaj twins, Nestle, L&T, Bharti Airtel, Maruti, Tech M, Sun Pharma, JSW Steel and HDFC Life, which lost 1-3 per cent.

While Coal India, Power Grid, HDFC twins, ITC, ICICI Bank, SBI, Tata Motors, Axis Bank, and NTPC were among the handful of index gainers.

Broader markets bled more than benchmarks with the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices falling up to 0.7 per cent.

Within sectors, Nifty consumer durables, FMCG, metals, realty and pharma indices suffered the most losses ending around 1 per cent lower each, while bank and financial pockets held ground and logged fractional gains.

Sensex jumps 1,017 points on RBI’s 50-bps hike; Nifty nears 17,100; banks lead


The Reserve Bank of India’s in-line monetary policy action lifted equities on Friday. The benchmark indices snapped their seven-day losing streak as the RBI delivered a 50-basis point repo rate hike, and underscored the resilience of the Indian economy in his statement.

At the index level, the S&P BSE Sensex climbed 1,313 points intra-day before cooling off a little to end at 57,427, up 1,017 points or 1.8 per cent. The NSE Nifty50, meanwhile, inched closer to 17,200 level before ending at 17,094, up 276 points or 1.64 per cent.

26 of the 30 Sensex constituents, and 41 of the 50 Nifty constituents closed in the positive zone led by Hindalco, Bharti Airtel, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finance, Kotak Bank, Titan, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Tata Steel, and ICICI Bank. These shares rallied between 2 per cent and 5.6 per cent.

The list of losers included Asian Paints, Coal India, Dr Reddy’s Labs, Britannia, Adani Enterprises, and ITC.

Among sectors, the Nifty PSU Bank, and Private Bank indices advanced around 3 per cent each, followed by the Nifty Metal, and Financial Services indices, up 2 per cent each.

Sensex ends choppy day 105 points higher; IT stocks lead; Financials weigh


Benchmark indices climbed on Friday as investors cheered US Fed chair Jerome Powell’s comment that the US may be able to avoid a “deep recession” despite aggressive rate hikes. The S&P BSE Sensex, which had erased all the morning gains during the day, clawed back to end at 59,793, up 105 points or 0.18 per cent.

The Nifty50, on the other hand, settled at 17,833, higher by 35 points or 0.19 per cent. In the broader markets, the Nifty MidCap 100 added 0.35 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap100 edged 0.06 per cent up.

Among individual stocks, Tech M, IndusInd Bank, Infosys, HCL Tech, Maruti Suzuki, SBI, and TCS were the top large-cap winners, while Astral, Godrej Industries, Bajaj Holdings and Investments, All Cargo Logistics, Nazara Technologies, and Stove Kraft were the top broader market gainers.

Sectorally, the Nifty IT index jumped the most, up 2 per cent, while the Nifty Financial Services and Realty indices dipped 0.5 per cent each.

Sensex falls 111 points, Nifty holds 15,750; RIL sinks 7%, MRPL 10%


Benchmark indices swung wildly in trade on Friday after the government’s move to tax oil refiners’ windfall gain amid soaring crude oil prices hurt index heavyweight Reliance Industries’ stock. Other oil-linked stocks such as ONGC, OIL India, MRPL, and Chennai Petrochemicals, too, bled in the broader markets.

Overall, the BSE Sensex index gyrated 959 points intra-day before closing 111 points, or 0.21 per cent, lower at 52,908. The Nifty50, too, hit an intra-day low of 15,511 before settling at 15,752, down 28 points or 0.18 per cent.

In the broder markets, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices fell 0.07 per cent and 0.46 per cent, respectively. Among sectors, the BSE Oil and Gas Index dropped 3.5 per cent.

Shares of oil upstream companies, including Reliance Industries (RIL), ONGC, and Oil India, came under heavy selling pressure on Friday after the government imposed taxes on the export of petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel (ATF), as it mandated exporters of these products to meet the requirements of the domestic market first.

Sensex ends volatile day 135 points lower, Nifty below 15,300; Titan drops 6%


The S&P BSE Sensex exhibited wild swings in trade on Friday as investors remained worried about global growth outlook. The 30-pack index gyrated in a range of 732 points intra-day, and settled 135 points, or 0.26 per cent, lower at 51,360.

The NSE Nifty50, meanwhile, closed at 15,294, down 67 points or 0.44 per cent. Bajaj twins, Coal India, JSW Steel, Apollo Hospitals, ITC, ICICI Bank, RIL, and HDFC Bank were the top Nifty gainers, rising between 0.8 per cent and 3 per cent.

On the flipside, Titan Company, Wipro, HDFC Life, Shree Cement, BPCL, Dr Reddy’s Labs, and Asian Paints were the top drags, down up to 6 per cent.

Sectorally, the Nifty Pharma index was worst hit, down over 2 per cent on the NSE, while the Nifty Bank added the most, up 0.75 per cent.

In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices underperformed the benchmarks and slipped up to 0.9 per cent.

New Covid variant spooks markets; Sensex ends 1,688-pts lower at 57,107


Fears that a new strain could fuel outbreaks in many countries, straining health systems, potentially evading vaccines and complicating efforts to reopen economies and borders, sent a wave of risk aversion across global markets Friday.

Falling in-line with all global peers, the BSE Sensex plunged 1,688 points, or 2.9 per cent, to end today’s bloodbath at 57,107 levels. The index hit a high and low of 58,255 and 56,994, respectively.
The Nifty50, too, erased 510 points, or 2.9 per cent, to close at 17,026. During the day, the index slipped below the 17,000-mark (at 16,986), a first since August this year.

The stocks witnessed their biggest intra-day fall since April 12, 2021, and also their biggest weekly fall since January 29, 2021.

The meltdown was equally bad in the broader markets, where the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices fell 3.2 per cent and 2.6 per cent, respectively.

Banks, IT drag Sensex 678 points down, Nifty gives up 17,700; IRCTC falls 8%


The markets exhibited a high amount of volatility for the second day in a row on the back of unabated selling pressure in select index heavyweights. The BSE Sensex tumbled to a low of 59,089, but eventually ended 678 points lower at 59,307. In the process, the BSE index has now shed 5 per cent (2,938 points) from its recent peak of 62,245.

The NSE Nifty logged its second straight weekly loss, down 185 points at 17,672. The Nifty has declined 3.8 per cent (677 points) in the last two weeks. In intra-day trades on Friday, the 50-share index dipped to a low of 17,613, and was within striking distance of its 50-DMA (Daily Moving Average) at 17,570-odd levels.

The broader markets outperformed the benchmark indices in trades today. The BSE Midcap index edged 0.2 per cent higher, while the Smallcap index ended slipped 0.4 per cent, as against a 1.1 per cent decline in the Sensex.

Among sectors, the BSE Energy index plunged 1.9 per cent, and the IT index shed 1.6 per cent. The Bankex was down over a per cent. The Auto, Healthcare and Realty indices ended marginally in the positive zone.

The overall breadth was marginally negative at close. Out of 3,399 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,796 declined, while 1,452 advanced.

Sensex slips 102 points, Nifty holds 18,100; ITC drops 3%; IRB Infra zooms 20%


Financial shares came to the rescue of the benchmark indices for the second straight day, as select index heavyweights weighed under selling pressure.

The BSE benchmark index, the Sensex, opened 120-odd points higher at 61,044, and rallied to a high of 61,420 on the back of fresh buying in early trades. Selling pressure re-emerged in second half of the trading session, with ITC, technology and metal stocks leading the fall. The BSE 30-share index slid to a low of 60,551 – down 869 points from the day’s high.

The Sensex eventually ended with a minor loss of 100 points at 60,822. The NSE Nifty from a high of 18,314, dropped to a low of 18,034, and finally settled 63 points lower at 18,115. The India VIX declined 1.8 per cent to 17.70.

Among sectors, the Bank Nifty rallied to a fresh all-time high at 40,587, and ended 0.7 per cent higher at 40,315. The Realty index surged 2.4 per cent to 509.75. On the flip side, the NSE Metal index tumbled over 3 per cent to 5,686. The Media index shed 2.3 per cent, while the ITC and Pharma indices were down 1.5 per cent each.

In the broader markets, the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices were down over a per cent each. The overall breadth too was fairly negative, with 1,967 declining stocks versus 1,327 advancing shares on the BSE.
