Sensex, Nifty post biggest weekly gain in 8 months; Airtel rallies 4.8%


Benchmark indices settled the day on a higher note, extending gains for the fourth day straight, as investors remain optimistic ahead of the Union Budget next week. Better than expected corporate earnings also aided the sentiment.

Nifty, Sensex posted their biggest weekly gains since May 27, led by gains in banking and financial stocks.


Demonetisation, Trump’s election lead to chaotic swings in the sensex


Benchmark indices slumped by almost 3% tracking weak global cues after US bond yields soared on expectations US President-elect Donald Trump’s policies would stoke inflation. Further, demonetisation move by the government dampened investor sentiment especially with fast moving consumer goods and consumer discretionary sectors to have an impact in the short term. In an effort to curb black money and counterfeiting the government in a surprising move announced the demonetisation of Rs 500 and 1,000 currency notes with effect from midnight Tuesday.

A week of highs which tapered off slightly


After a lot of struggle, the market has ended lower on Friday. The Sensex is down 105.61 points or 0.4 percent at 27836.50, and the Nifty fell 23.60 points or 0.3 percent at 8541.40. About 1000 shares advanced, 1681 shares declined and 197 shares remained unchanged.

Bharti Airtel, Tata Steel, HDFC twins and Adani Ports were top gainers while Infosys, TCS, Wipro, NTPC and Coal India were top losers in the Sensex.

Have Markets overcome the Brexit hangover?


On Friday, July 1, 2016, Shriram City was the most active stock on Bombay Stock Exchange after multiple block deals. Mahanagar Gas, L&T, Sun Pharma, ITC, SBI and Axis Bank were other most active shares on exchanges.

The Sensex closes up 145.19 points or 0.5 percent at 27144.91, and the Nifty was up 40.60 points or 0.5 percent at 8328.35. About 1559 shares have advanced, 1157 shares declined, and 139 shares are unchanged. ONGC, BHEL, L&T, GAIL and Dr Reddy’s were top gainers while TCS, Coal India, Adani Ports and HDFC were losers.

Brexit spooks the markets globally!


The Sensex recouped 500 points loss in the last couple of hours of trade, especially after recovery in Europe but still ended sharply lower after the UK voted to leave European Union.

The index fell 604.51 points or 2.24 percent to 26397.71 and the Nifty slipped 181.85 points or 2.20 percent to 8088.60.

About 1823 shares declined against 709 advancing shares on BSE.

Tata Motors cracked 8 percent and Tata Steel fell 6 percent as both companies have huge exposure to Europe.

European markets were down 5-8 percent.

The week ended June 4, 2016


The market hit fresh 7-month high intraday Friday with the Sensex reclaiming 27000 and Nifty 8250 levels. However, profit booking in the last couple of hours of trade dragged the benchmarks as well as broader markets to end flat despite positive global cues.

The 30-share BSE Sensex declined 0.11 points to 26843.03 while the 50-share NSE Nifty rose 1.85 points to 8220.80. The market breadth was also weak as about 1521 shares declined against 1092 advancing shares on Bombay Stock Exchange. The market volatility may continue for some more time after hitting multi-month highs, as investors are eagerly waiting for key events – RBI policy meeting on June 7, Fed meeting on June 14-15 and the referendum in Britain.
