Sensex, Nifty end little changed; Tata Steel, SBI advance 3%


Despite a range-bound trade, domestic markets hit fresh lifetime highs for the third consecutive day on Friday. Investment sentiment remained in check in the absence of any key global and domestic cues.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 41,681.54-level, up 7.62 points or 0.018 per cent. Tata Steel, YES Bank, SBI, and Hero MotoCorp were the top gainers at the 30-share index, while Vedanta, Tata Motors, ITC, and M&M were the top drags for the day. On the NSE, the broader Nifty50 settled little changed at 12,271.8-mark, up 12.1 points or 0.09 per cent. Markets ended at record closing highs for the fourth straight session.

The benchmark Sensex and Nifty hit fresh highs of 41,809.96 and 12,293.90, respectively.

On the sectoral front, public sector banks gained the most on Friday fter the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) decided to buy and sell bonds worth Rs 10,000 crore via open market operations. At close, the Nifty PSU bank index was the top performer on the NSE, up over 2 per cent. On the downside, Nifty Auto index slipped 0.45 per cent.

For the week, the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex gained 1.6 per cent, while the Nifty50 added 1.5 per cent registering their biggest weekly gains in nearly two months. Besides, Nifty Bank index advanced 1 per cent this week.

In the broader markets, the S&P BSE mid-cap index ended 0.15 per cent higher at 14,835.97 level, while the S&P BSE small-cap index ended unchanged at 13,391.03 level, down 0.03 per cent.

Sensex ends 434 points lower as RBI cuts GDP forecast; banks slip


A 25 basis point (bps)-rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday failed to cheer market participants as concerns over slowing economic growth dented investor sentiment. In its fourth bi-monthly monetary policy meet, the RBI’s monetary policy committee (MPC) did cut the repo rate, as widely expected; however, a sharp reduction in the GDP growth forecast to 6.1 per cent for the financial year 2019-20 (FY20) caught investors off guard.

Benchmark indices, S&P BSE Sensex and NSE’s Nifty50, lost over 1 per cent, thus taking their losing streak to the fifth consecutive session.

The S&P BSE Sensex dropped 434 points or 1.14 per cent to settle at 37,673.31. Financial stocks led the decline with HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank falling up to over 3 per cent.

On the NSE, the frontline index Nifty50 ended at 11,175, down 139 points or 1.23 per cent.

On a weekly basis, Sensex shed nearly 3 per cent while Nifty50 lost 2.93 per cent.

On the sectoral front, Nifty Bank index slid nearly 700 points or 2.40 per cent to settle at 27,731.85 levels, with 10 out of 12 constituents ending in the red. Nifty IT index was the only sectoral index on the NSE that ended in the green. The Nifty IT index ended at 15,340.30, up 62 points or 0.41 per cent.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index lost 131 points or 0.94 per cent to settle at 13,713.79 levels, while the S&P BSE SmallCap index closed at 12,809, down 102 points or 0.79 per cent.

Sensex loses 167 points, Nifty ends at 11,512; metals, realty dip


Selling in select blue-chip counters such as HDFC, IndusInd Bank, TCS, L&T, ONGC, and Vedanta and weak global cues dragged the equity market lower on Friday. The S&P BSE Sensex lost 167 points or 0.43 per cent to settle at 38,822.57 while the Nifty50 index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) closed the day at 11,512.40, down 59 points or 0.51 per cent.

On a weekly basis, however, Sensex gained 2.12 per cent while Nifty added 2.11 per cent.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-cap index ended at 14,266, down 90 points or 0.62 per cent and the S&P BSE Small-cap index lost 109 points or 0.81 per cent to settle at 13,332 levels.

On the sectoral front, metal stocks slipped the most with the Nifty Metal index ending 2.64 per cent lower at 2,453.95 levels. Realty and pharma counters were the other leading losers of the day.

Sensex gains 264 points ahead of FM’s media briefing, Q1 GDP nos.


Domestic indices remained volatile on Friday, but surged in the last trading hour, ahead of the June quarter GDP numbers, that were scheduled to be released later in the day. Further, reports of a likely announcement by the Finance Ministry on merger of public sector banks (PSBs) increased buying interest at the counters. That apart, hopes of face-to-face trade talks between the United States and China helped ease market sentiment.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex settled 264 points, or 0.71 per cent, higher at 37,333 level, lifted by HDFC twins, ITC, ICICI Bank, and Hindustan Unilever. All the index heavyweights were up in the range of 1-3 per cent. YES Bank, Sun Pharma, IndusInd Bank, and Tata Steel ended the day as top gainers, while Power Grid, ONGC, HCL Tech, and Larsen and Toubro closed as top laggards. Meanwhile, the broader Nifty50 ended at 11,023-mark, up 75 points or 0.68 per cent.

Sectorally, all the indices ended in the green. Nifty Pharma index ended the day as top gainer, up 2.4 per cent, followed by Nifty Metal index, up 1.8 per cent.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index closed at 13,468 level, up 134 points, or 1.01 per cent. The S&P BSE SmallCap index closed at 12,535 level, up 104 points, or 0.84 per cent.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to address media later in the day, where she is likely to announce mega plan for merging multiple set of public sector banks (PSB).

The department of financial services in the finance ministry called a meeting, on Friday, with chief executives of ten public sector banks which are seen as top contenders for merger. The banks invited for consultations on Friday are: Union Bank of India, Canara Bank, Punjab National Bank, United Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, United Bank, Allahabad Bank, Corporation Bank, Syndicate Bank and Andhra Bank.

Shares of PSBs were trading mixed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on Friday afternoon. Oriental Bank of Commerce, Central Bank of India, Syndicate Bank and Allahabad Bank were up in the range of 3 per cent to 6 per cent on the NSE. On the other hand, State Bank of India (SBI), Union Bank of India, Bank of India, Indian Bank and Bank of Baroda were down between 1 and 2 per cent.

Bulls take charge ahead of exit polls: Sensex up 537 pts; Nifty over 11,400


Sensex and Nifty surged on the final day of a volatile week on Friday with both the benchmark indices gaining over a per cent each ahead of exit polls outcome on Monday.

Kotak Mahindra, ICICI Bank, HDFC twins, and ITC were the biggest contributors in Sensex’s march to the north.

The benchmark Sensex zoomed almost 1.5 per cent, up 537 points, to close at 37,931, with Bajaj Finance, Hero MotoCorp, Maruti Suzuki India, Kotak Bank, and Bajaj Auto registering the biggest gains. Market breadth remained in favour of buyers with the advance-decline ratio at 3:2.

The broader Nifty50 also surged 1.33 per cent, or 150 points, to end the day at 11,407. About 1,029 stocks advanced and 723 shares declined on National Stock Exchange.

Among sectoral indices, only three indices remained in the red, with Nifty Media gaining the highest 3.53 per cent. Nifty Bank, Nifty Auto, Nifty Finance Service, Nifty FMCG and Nifty Private Bank all rose more than 2 per cent.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap gained 153 points, or 1.08 per cent, at 14,308.36, while the S&P BSE SmallCap also rose 70 points, or 0.51 per cent, at 13,887.

Sensex pares some gains, ends 269 points up, Nifty above 11,400


After surging 500 points in the intra-day trade, the S&P BSE Sensex witnessed a sharp fall at the fag-end of the session, mainly due to profit-booking to end at 38,024, up 269 points or 0.71 per cent. Financial stocks such as HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank contributed the most to the index’s gains while Reliance Industries (RIL), ITC and Hindustan Unilever (HUL) emerged as the biggest drags.

The NSE’s benchmark index Nifty50 closed above 11,400 level at 11,427, up 84 points or 0.74 per cent. The index hit a high of 11,487 levels during the day.

Both Sensex and Nifty reclaimed their crucial levels of 38,000 and 11,400 levels, respectively in the intra-day trade after a gap of six months.

On a weekly basis, Sensex gained 3.68 per cent and Nifty added 3.54 per cent.

Market breadth remained in favour of declines as out 2,860 companies traded on BSE, 1,476 declined and 1,209 advanced while 175 remained unchanged. A total of 59 securities hit their 52-week highs while 111 scrips hit their one-year lows.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index ended 83 points, or 0.55 per cent higher at 15,172, while the S&P BSE SmallCap index settled at 14,837, up 51 points or 0.34 per cent.

Banking barometer Nifty Bank, too hit a fresh record high of 29,520.70 during the day. It ended at 29,381.45, up over 1.50 per cent with 10 out of 12 constituents ending in the green.

Sensex gains 197 points on Friday; RIL pips TCS to become most valued firm


The benchmark indices ended over 0.5 per cent higher led by a rise in the financial stocks and Reliance Industries (RIL).

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 35,457, up 197 points (0.56 per cent), while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,682, up 66 points (0.62 per cent). In the broader markets, the S&P BSE MidCap index ended flat at 14,998, while the S&P BSE SmallCap slipped 0.4 per cent to end at 14,486.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty PSU Bank index settled 2 per cent higher led by Oriental Bank of Commerce and Bank of India.

The rupee traded on a firm note on Friday rising to 71.71 per US dollar in intra-day trade, up from its previous close of 71.98 against the greenback.

Shares of RIL on Friday rose 2.7 per cent to Rs 1,127 on the BSE helping the oil-to-telecom major pip Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to become the most-valued company in terms of market capitalisation. On the BSE, RIL’s market capitalisation was at Rs 7,14,668.54 crore, while India’s largest IT firm by revenue TCS slipped to the second spot with a valuation of Rs 7,06,292.61 crore.

Shares of Rallis India, Deepak Fertilisers & Chemicals, Dixon Technologies (India), Hexaware Technologies, Take Solutions and BASF were among 22 stocks from the S&P BSE Allcap index hitting their respective 52-week lows on Friday in intra-day trade.

Sensex ends 155 pts lower; SBI down 4% post Q1 results


Benchmark indices ended lower on Friday, after touching record highs for four straight sessions, following global market trends. Metals, pharma and PSU banks were the top draggers during the day.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended the day at 37,869 down 155 while the Nifty50 index settled at 11,429 down 41 points

SBI slipped 4% after it reported a bigger-than-expected quarterly loss on Friday, as the country’s biggest lender by assets made higher provisions for treasury losses. SBI’s third consecutive quarterly net loss came in at Rs 48.76 billion ($707.28 million) for the three months to June 30, compared with a profit of Rs 20.06 billion a year ago, and a record loss of Rs 77.18 billion in the March quarter. Gross NPA stood at 10.69% vs 10.91% QoQ while provisions were at Rs 192.28 billion vs Rs 280.96 billion QoQ

Shares of Jet Airways hit a three-year low of Rs 262, down 10% on the BSE on Friday in early morning trade after the company deferred announcing their June quarter numbers to an unspecified date. On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the stock hit a low of Rs 258, and is trading at its lowest level since June 16, 2015
