Indices gain for 6th straight day, Sensex ends 246 points higher


Extending their gaining streak into the sixth straight session, benchmark indices ended with over half a per cent gains on Friday even as global peers tumbled after China’s GDP growth slipped to a 27-year low of 6 per cent.

Industry heavyweights Reliance Industries (RIL), HDFC Bank, TCS, and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) helped benchmark S&P BSE Sensex settle at 39,298 levels, up 246 points or 0.63 per cent. The 30-share index hit an intra-day and low of 39,361 and 38,964, respectively.

YES Bank (up over 8 per cent) emerged as the top gainer on the index while Tata Motors (down 1 per cent) the biggest loser.

In the broader market, both mid and small-caps outperformed the headline indices. The S&P BSE MidCap index added 253 points or 1.78 per cent to close at 14,420 while the S&P BSE SmallCap index ended at 13,127, up 213 points or 1.65 per cent.

On the NSE, the broader Nifty50 index gained 75.50 points or 0.65 per cent to close at 11,662 levels.

On a weekly basis, both Sensex and Nifty ended with 3 per cent gains.

On the sectoral front, barring Nifty IT, all the other indices ended in the green. Relaty stocks advanced the most, followed by metal and PSU bank stocks. The Nifty Realty index climbed nearly 2 per cent to 262.80 levels.

Bulls take charge ahead of exit polls: Sensex up 537 pts; Nifty over 11,400


Sensex and Nifty surged on the final day of a volatile week on Friday with both the benchmark indices gaining over a per cent each ahead of exit polls outcome on Monday.

Kotak Mahindra, ICICI Bank, HDFC twins, and ITC were the biggest contributors in Sensex’s march to the north.

The benchmark Sensex zoomed almost 1.5 per cent, up 537 points, to close at 37,931, with Bajaj Finance, Hero MotoCorp, Maruti Suzuki India, Kotak Bank, and Bajaj Auto registering the biggest gains. Market breadth remained in favour of buyers with the advance-decline ratio at 3:2.

The broader Nifty50 also surged 1.33 per cent, or 150 points, to end the day at 11,407. About 1,029 stocks advanced and 723 shares declined on National Stock Exchange.

Among sectoral indices, only three indices remained in the red, with Nifty Media gaining the highest 3.53 per cent. Nifty Bank, Nifty Auto, Nifty Finance Service, Nifty FMCG and Nifty Private Bank all rose more than 2 per cent.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap gained 153 points, or 1.08 per cent, at 14,308.36, while the S&P BSE SmallCap also rose 70 points, or 0.51 per cent, at 13,887.

Sensex rises 732 pts, Nifty ends at 10,472; India VIX eases 8%


The benchmark indices ended over 2 per cent higher on Friday after the rupee rose against US dollar amid firm Asian markets.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 34,734, up 732 points (2.15 per cent), while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,472, up 238 points (2.32 per cent).

The rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Friday, rising 53 paise to 73.58 against the greenback in intra-day trade.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Auto index settled 4 per cent higher led by a rally in shares of Mahindra & Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki India. The Nifty Bank index, too, rose 2.5 per cent led by IndusInd Bank and ICICI Bank.

However, the Nifty IT index slipped 1 per cent lower led by a fall in Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which fell 3 per cent to Rs 1,920 on the NSE after the company reported a lower than expected revenue growth of 3.7 per cent in constant currency (CC) terms in September quarter on the sequential basis. The Street was estimating revenue growth of 4 per cent in CC terms for the quarter.

Nifty gains 1%, ends above 10,600 on Friday; auto, metal stocks gain


Benchmark indices rose on Friday after rupee recovered from its a 16-month low against the dollar.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 34,925, up 262 points, while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,605, up 91 points

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Metal index gained over 2% led by a rise in Hindalco, SAIL, JSPL and Tata Steel. The Nifty Auto index also rose over 1% led by Exide Industries and Tata Motors.

In individual stocks, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the country’s biggest software services exporter, became the first Indian company. which saw its market capitalisation (market-cap) cross Rs 7-trillion mark.

Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) rallied 8% on the BSE after reports suggested that the company has entered into merger talks with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) ahead of the implementation of the universal exchange framework in October.
