Halting its four-day gaining streak, equity market ended in the negative territory on Friday amid worries over economic damage from the coronavirus outbreak and profit-booking in some of the recent outperformers.
The S&P BSE Sensex today slipped 164 points or 0.4 per cent to settle at 41,142, with NTPC (up over 3 per cent) being the top gainer and IndusInd Bank (down nearly 3 per cent) the biggest loser.
Reliance Industries (RIL), HDFC, ICICI Bank and L&T contributed the most to the index’s losses.
The NSE’s Nifty50 index ended at 12,086, down 51.55 points or 0.42 per cent.
On a weekly basis, both Sensex and Nifty gained nearly 4 per cent each.
Sectorally, realty stocks bled the most while media and pharma counters advanced the most. The Nifty Realty index fell around 2 per cent to Rs 320.55. On the other hand, Nifty Media climbed nearly 2 per cent to 1,823 points and the Nifty Pharma settled over 1 per cent higher at 8,335-mark.
In the broader market, the Nifty Midcap 100 index rose 0.57 per cent to 18,350 points while the Nifty SmallCap 100 ended flat at 6,236 levels, down 0.07 per cent.

Bulls held their reigns for the second consecutive day on Friday, as markets decisively stayed in the positive territory after a mild blip in the early morning trade. Pre-budget rally and decent Q3FY20 results throughout the day were the biggest factors driving the markets today. Banking counters were leading the charge from the front with HDFC twins, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Axis Bank being the top contributors of the gains today.
The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex surged 421 points off day’s low to hit an intra-day high of 41,697.03. At close, the Sensex settled at 41,613.19 level, up 226.79 points or 0.55 per cent. UltraTech Cement, L&T, Tech Mahindra, and Kotak Mahindra Bank were the top gainers on the 30-share index, while Power Grid, IndusInd Bank, TCS, and Reliance Industries were the top laggards.
On the NSE, the Nifty50 reclaimed the 12,250-mark in the intra-day trade today and hit a high of 12,272.15. The 50-share index ended 67.90 points, or 0.56 per cent, higher at 12,248.25 mark. Sectorally, all the key indices settled in the positive territory barring Nifty IT and Pharma indices. Nifty Metal index settled 1.02 per cent higher, followed by Nifty Financial Services index (up 0.9 per cent) and Nifty Bank index (up 0.8 per cent).
Broader markets continued their outperformance on Friday as well, with the S&P BSE mid-cap index hitting its fresh 52-week high in the intra-day trade today. At close, the index was at 15,826.57 level, up 0.8 per cent. The S&P BSE small-cap index, meanwhile, settled 0.5 per cent higher at 14,848.49.

Benchmark indices ended marginally lower on Friday led by a fall in ICICI Bank, State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC, RIL and Axis Bank.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 36,671, down 54 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 11,035, down 23 points.
Among sectoral indices, Nifty Metal index ended 1.5 per cent lower with Jindal Steel & Power and MOIL among the top losers. The Nifty IT index, too, settled 1.1 per cent lower, dragged by Wipro and Infibeam Avenues
In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index ended 12 points, or 0.08 per cent lower at 14,804, while the S&P BSE SmallCap index settled at 14,529, down 11 points, or 0.08 per cent.
Shares of Wipro fell 5 per cent to Rs 256 in intra-day trade on the BSE in after huge block deals were executed on the counter. Till 11:22 am, a combined 57.86 million equity shares, representing 1.3 per cent equity, of Wipro had changed hands on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE. The stock ended at Rs 256.50, down 4.6 per cent.
Shares of Allahabad Bank hit a 52-week high of Rs 58.20, up 6.5 per cent on the BSE in the intra-day trade, extending its past three weeks’ rally after the government announced capital infusion of Rs 6,896 crore in the bank.The stock settled 4.39 per cent higher at Rs 57.05.

The markets trimmed their day’s losses and ended flat on Friday amid weakness in their Asian peers, that wobbled on Friday as investors braced for US tariffs against China.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 35,622, up 22 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,818, up 10 points.
Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Pharma index ended over 2% higher led by rise in the shares of Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Cipla and Piramal Enterprises.
Shares of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) hit a new high of Rs 1,849 per share, up 3% on the BSE after the company said its board approved a proposal of buyback upto 76.19 million equity shares at price of Rs 2,100 per share through tender offer. The stock surpassed its previous high of Rs 1,840 recorded on June 14, 2018.
Manpasand Beverages was locked in lower circuit of 5% at Rs 158 on the BSE after the exchange placed shares of the company under ASM (Additional Surveillance Measure) framework effective from today, June 15, 2018. The BSE shifted Manpasand Beverages and Sai Baba Investment and Commercial Enterprises under enhanced surveillance measures where 100% margins will be applicable from June 16, 2018.

Benchmark indices rose on Friday after rupee recovered from its a 16-month low against the dollar.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 34,925, up 262 points, while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,605, up 91 points
Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Metal index gained over 2% led by a rise in Hindalco, SAIL, JSPL and Tata Steel. The Nifty Auto index also rose over 1% led by Exide Industries and Tata Motors.
In individual stocks, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the country’s biggest software services exporter, became the first Indian company. which saw its market capitalisation (market-cap) cross Rs 7-trillion mark.
Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) rallied 8% on the BSE after reports suggested that the company has entered into merger talks with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) ahead of the implementation of the universal exchange framework in October.
