Sensex ends at new closing high of 37,337; ITC up 5% post Q1


The benchmark indices ended at record closing high for the second straight session on Friday on strong quarterly results. The gains were led by index heavyweights like ITC, RIL, and Hindalco.

The S&P BSE Sensex settled at a record high of 37,337, up 352 points, while the broader Nifty 50 index settled at a new high of 11,278, up 111 points.

In intra-day deals, the S&P BSE Sensex hit a fresh all-time high of 37368.62 while the Nifty50 index touched its record high level of 11,283.40.

Leading the gains is ITC, which has surged over 5 per cent on the BSE. Beating street estimates, diversified conglomerate ITC on Thursday posted a 10.07 per cent jump in its net profit at Rs 28.19 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2018 with its total revenue, inclusive of other income, registered at Rs 112.78 billion.

Among other gainers, Reliance Industries was among the top contributors to the NSE index, up over 1.5 per cent ahead of its quarterly results later in the day. The oil-to-retail conglomerate will also report results of its telecom arm Reliance Jio.

Nifty Bank index also hit an all-time high, ending 0.8% higher for the day. IDFC Bank, Federal Bank, and Axis Bank were the top gainers in the pack, up between 2 per cent to 2.6 per cent.

Indices end higher as PM Modi likely to win no-trust vote


Benchmark indices gained on Friday, as the Modi government is expected to win the no-confidence vote, to be held at 6 pm today. In the 545-member (including the Speaker) Lok Sabha, the BJP-led NDA can bank on around 311 members.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended the day at 36,496, up 145 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 11,010, up 53 points.

IT and pharma stocks gained as the rupee hit an all-time low. The Nifty IT index was trading up by 1.5 per cent with Infosys, Tech Mahindra and HCL Tech up between 1.6 per cent to 2.6 per cent. Meanwhile, in the pharma sector, Sun Pharma and Cipla gained over 2.5 per cent each.

Among individual stocks, Bajaj Finserv hit a record high, after the Bajaj Group-owned asset & wealth management firm posted a 41 per cent surge in its first-quarter profit on Thursday.

Bajaj Auto, on the other hand, dipped 9 per cent after the company reported a lower than expected 21% year on year (YoY) growth in standalone net profit Rs 11.15 billion in June quarter (Q1FY19). Analysts on an average had expected a profit of around Rs 13 billion for the quarter

Indices shrug-off trade war fears; Sensex ends 83 pts up at 35,658 levels


The benchmark indices pared most of their day’s gains to end marginally higher on Friday tracking recovery in the global markets.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 35,658, up 83 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,773, up 23 points.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Auto index settled over 1% led by rise in the stocks of Ashok Leyland, Hero MotoCorp and Tata Motors.

The rupee recovered 21 paise from intra-day low of 69.03 to trade at 68.82 against the US dollar in late morning deals. As the US is set to impose tariffs on Chinese goods today and sustained foreign capital outflows pressured the sentiment, the rupee fell sharply to 69.03 a dollar before quoting 68.82. The rupee moved in range between 68.82 and 69.03.

Shares of paint company Asian Paints, fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) firm Hindustan Unilever (HUL) and information technology giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) from the Sensex have hit their respective new highs on the BSE on Friday. Thus far in the current calendar year 2018, these three stocks have outperformed the market by gaining in the range of 15% to 39%, as compared to 4.5% rise in the S&P BSE Sensex.

Nifty ends firmly above 10800, Sensex up 257 points; Pharma gains


Markets edged up on Friday with Nifty50 closing above 10,800-levels, even as broader global markets remained weak.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended the day at 35,689, up 257 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,822, up 81 points.

The top gainers on the Sensex include Sun Pharma, HDFC, Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M), and Axis Bank whereas Reliance Industries (RIL), and Coal India were the major losers.

Among sectoral gainers, banking and finance sectoral indices gained with Nifty Bank, Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Private Bank index up over 1% each. Meanwhile, Nifty Pharma index was up 1.8% with Sun Pharma gaining over 4%.

Bajaj Finance, which hit a new high of Rs 2,330, up 3% on the BSE in late noon deal on Friday, has surpasses private sector lender Axis Bank in market capitalisation (market-cap) ranking. Thus far in the calendar year 2018 (CY18), Bajaj Finance has outperformed the market by surging 33% as compared to 4% rise in the S&P BSE Sensex. Axis Bank has underperformed the market by falling 8% during the period.

Indices end lower on Friday, Nifty fails to hold 10700; bank stocks fall


Benchmark indices edged lower on Friday as losses in financials offset gains in auto stocks, with investor focus shifting to the monsoons.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 35,227, down 95 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,696, down 40 points.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Bank index ended over 1% lower led by a fall in the shares of IndusInd Bank and Federal Bank.

Meanwhile, government data showed on Thursday that Indian economy grew 7.7% year-on-year in January-March, its quickest pace in nearly two years driven by higher growth in manufacturing, the farm sector and construction.

Adani Power Mundra, a subsidiary of Adani Power, is likely to approach the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for bankruptcy protection. This comes after its lenders stepped back from stake-sale negotiations with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam (GUVNL), the state power distribution company.

Sun TV Network fell for fifth straight session, down 3.9% at Rs 881.85, on the NSE. Sun TV Network jumped 5.69% in last one year as compared to a 10.94% rally in Nifty and a 1.48% spurt in the Nifty Media index.

Indices end flat on Friday, Nifty holds 10,550; TCS gains 7%


Benchmark indices were flat on Friday even as minutes of the central bank’s policy panel meeting stoked expectations of an interest rate hike, with losses in financials and metals overshadowing gains in information technology stocks.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 34,416, down 12 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,564, down 1 points.

The rupee dropped to its lowest in more than a year following a hawkish tone in the minutes, released on Thursday, of the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting that took place earlier this month.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty PSU Bank index slipped nearly 2.5% led by a fall in shares of Bank of India and IDBI Bank.

Investors cheered the results of Tata Consultancy Services, sending its shares to an all-time high of Rs 3,421 after the country’s top software services exporter posted its biggest-ever profit on Thursday.

Prakash Constrowell share price rallied 10% after the company has been declared L-1 bidder by the MCGM (Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai) for the new project Dumpsite Reclamation at Mulund Dumping Ground (MDG) in Mumbai by adopting suitable technology for existing garbage dump.

J B Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals fell 2.33% to Rs 312.65 on BSE after the company said it received an order from Pollution Control Committee, Daman for closure of its formulation manufacturing facility at Daman.

They were once seen as among India’s most promising growth stories. Now, however, the fate of ABG Shipyard, Alok Industries and Lanco Infratech is seen as near-certain but in the opposite direction. With huge debt, few takers for their assets and the whopping write-offs (‘haircuts’) that banks are likely to take on the loans given to these companies, industry experts believe liquidation of the trio are among the few options. All three have defaulted on their huge payment obligations.

Sensex rises 323 pts, Nifty closes at 10491; Metal, Pharma stocks rally


The domestic indices ended 1% higher on Friday taking cues from the global markets. The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 34,142, up 323 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,491, up 108 points.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Metal index ended nearly 3% higher on Friday led by a rise in the shares of Jindal Steel & Power, Tata Steel and National Aluminium Company. The Nifty Pharma index also ended over 2.5% higher led by surge in the stocks of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and Divi’s Laboratories.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries turned volatile, trading 3.5% higher at Rs 561 on the BSE at 02:34 pm on Friday, after the company said the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) issued Form 483, with three observations, for its Halol facility in Gujarat.

Moody’s upgrade lifts market mood; Sensex up 236 pts, Nifty ends above 10,200


Benchmark indices ended higher on Friday after global rating agency Moody’s Investors Service upgraded India’s sovereign rating to Baa2 from Baa3 and changed the outlook to stable from positive.

This development that will give a big boost to Modi government, reduce the cost overseas borrowing and improve investments in India. Rating company, while justifying the upgrade said that the reforms undertaken by the government will “improve the business climate, enhancing productivity, stimulating foreign and domestic investment, and ultimately fostering strong and sustainable growth.”

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 33,342, up 236 points, while the broader Nifty50 settled at 10,283, up 69 points.

Mkts end at record highs, up over 1% for the week; PSU Banks extend gains


Benchmark indices ended at record highs on Friday as Public sector banks continued their rally. The indices hit fresh highs at intra-day deals too with Nifty50 climbing to 10,461 and Sensex touching 33,726 levels.

Investor sentiment has been upbeat in India with the government’s recent announcement of a recapitalisation plan for banks.

The broader NSE Nifty ended 0.3% up at 10,452 to end the week 1.2% higher while Sensex ended 0.3% higher at 33,685, to post a weekly gain of 1.6%.

About 1,429 shares advanced against 1,316 declining shares on the BSE.

Tata Power Co Ltd reported an about 44 per cent slump in quarterly profit, hurt by lower income from its power generation business, missing analysts’ forecasts.

Shares of Amtek Group companies – Amtek Auto, Metalyst Forgings and Castex Technologies – have locked in their respective upper limit of circuit breaker on the BSE after Bharat Forge said that it has participated in the process of acquiring Amtek Auto.

Friday Closing bell: Sensex up 250 pts, Nifty ends at record closing high; telecom, banks lead


Equity benchmarks closed sharply higher for the second consecutive session as investors cheered macro data and hopes raised for an early resolution to telecom NPAs post telecom deals.

The 30-share BSE Sensex was up 250.47 points at 32,432.69 and the 50-share NSE Nifty rose 71.10 points to 10,167.50.

The market breadth was weak as about 1,431 shares declined against 1,293 advancing shares on the BSE.

Bharti Airtel was up 6 percent, Tata Teleservices up 9 percent and Tata Communications up 2 percent after Airtel decided to buy consumer telecom business of Tata Sons. Bharti Infratel was up 3 percent.

Markets also got a boost after data showed inflation held steady, instead of accelerating as expected, raising tentative hopes the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) would be less hawkish about interest rates.
