Sensex up 428 on global cues; Nifty holds 12K ahead of FM presser


Indian equity markets edged higher for the third straight session as positive global cues fueled investors’ risk appetite. While metal stocks charged ahead during Friday’s trading session after US President Donald Trump said Washington and Beijing are very close to signing a “big” trade deal, auto stocks gained as Conservative leader Boris Johnson won election in the United Kingdom, paving way for Brexit-divorce deal by Janurary 31, 2020.

Besides, public sector banks (PSBs) rallied today after reports suggested that the government is considering increasing the government bond investment limit of foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) to at least 10 per cent of the outstanding, from 6 per cent now, with an aim to incorporate local bonds into global bond indices.

At close, the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex settled 428 points, or 1.05 per cent higher, at 41,009.71 level. Vedanta, Axis Bank, State Bank of India, ans Maurti Suzuki ended as the top gainers among the Sensex pack. On the contrary, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Auto, and Asian Paints settled as top laggards.

On the NSE, the Nifty50 closed near 12,100-mark, up 114 points, or 0.95 per cent, at 12,085.70 level.

For the week, Sensex added 1.5 per cent, Nifty50 advanced 1.4 per cent, and Nifty Bank index gained 2.2 per cent.

Sectorally, all the indices ended the day with gains. Nifty PSU Bank index gained the most, up nearly 4 per cent, followed by Nifty Metal index (up 2 per cent).

In the broader market, both, the S&P BSE mid-cap and small-cap indices closed 0.89 per cent higher at 14,824.80 and 13,334.45, respectively.

Sensex climbs 337 points, Nifty ends at 10,941; Maruti jumps 4%


Benchmark indices were trading higher in Friday’s afternoon trade, lifted by bank and automobile stocks.

The S&P BSE Sensex was trading around 36,890 levels, up 250 points, or 0.68 per cent. Tech Mahindra, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, NTPC, and Reliance Industries were the top gainers in the Sensex pack. The broader Nifty50 index was hovering near 10,920 level, up 73 points, or 0.67 per cent.

Nifty sectoral indices were trading largely in the green. While Nifty Private Bank index was up 1.2 per cent, Nifty Pharma index was down 0.5 per cent..

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index climbed 50 points, or 0.37 per cent, at 13,330 levels, while the S&P BSE SmallCap index zoomed 55 points, or 0.44 per cent, higher to 12,550 levels.

Sensex down 87 points, Nifty holds 11,550; banks dip, metals gain


Domestic indices ended Friday’s choppy session in the negative territory. The markets remained range-bound, in the positive territory, for most part of the day but were dragged lower by index heavyweights like HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Larsen & Toubro, and Bajaj Finance.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 38,736 levels, down 87 points or 0.22 per cent. Among the gainers, YES Bank, Tata Steel, Sun Pharma and Vedanta topped the charts while ONGC, Bajaj Finance, ONGC and L&T were at the lower end of the spectrum.

The broader Nifty50 too settled with cuts. The 50-share index settled at 11,552 levels, down 30 points, or 0.26 per cent.

In the broader market, the BSE MidCap index ended 59 points, or 0.41 per cent, higher at 14,554 levels while the BSE SmallCap index closed 22 points, or 0.16 per cent, higher at 13,776 levels.

Sectorally, banking, financial services and FMCG counters were under pressure. The Nifty Bank index closed 0.37 per cent lower followed by Nifty Financial Services index, down 0.29 per cent. Among gainers, Nifty metals, pharma and realty counters were up between 0.4-0.7 per cent.

Indices end volatile session in the red; metal, IT stocks drag


Benchmark indices ended Friday’s volatile session in the red, thus recording fall for the eighth straight day and third consecutive week, as investors remained cautious ahead of the US-China trade negotiation outcome.

India VIX was up almost 4 per cent to 26.49

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex ended the day 96 points, or 0.26 per cent, lower at 37,463, with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), HCL Tech, Tata Steel, IndusInd Bank and Infosys contributing the most to the indices’ fall. Twenty-one of the 30 constituents of BSE ended the session with losses.

The broader index Nifty50 gave up the crucial 11,300 mark and slipped 23 points, or 0.20 per cent, at 11,279. About 1,187 shares advanced, 1,270 shares declined, and 162 shares were unchanged.

Among sectoral indices, both Nifty IT and Nifty Metal dipped more than 1 per cent. However, Nifty PSU Bank gained 2.5 per cent, the highest among the gainers.

The broader indices fared better than their benchmark peers with the S&P BSE MidCap index ending 34 points, or 0.24 per cent, higher at 14,390, while the S&P BSE SmallCap index was ruling at 14,106, up 29 points or 0.21 per cent.

Sensex ends 289 points higher ahead of Karnataka polls


The markets ended higher on Friday ahead of the Karnataka Assembly elections. The southern state will vote on Saturday and the poll outcome will be known on May 15.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 35,536, up 289 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,807, up 90 points.

Among individual stocks, Asian Paints hit a record high on strong March-quarter results and was among the top contributors to index gains. Stock was the top gainer of the broader Nifty50 index.

Shares of Fortis Healthcare ended 3% lower at Rs 148 on the BSE, after the company said the board chooses the Hero Enterprises-Burman Family Office offer as the best for the hospital and diagnostic chain.

Shares of select pharmaceutical companies were under pressure, falling by up to 6% ahead of US President Donald Trump speech today about controlling prescription drug prices. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries slipped 6% to Rs 468 on the BSE in noon deal on back of heavy volumes. Novartis India, Marksans Pharma, Ajanta Pharma, Morepen Laboratories, Alkem Laboratories, Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company (SPARC) and Aarti Drugs were down in the range 3% to 4% on the BSE.

PC Jeweller on Thursday announced its board has approved buy-back of shares worth Rs 4.24 billion amid a sharp plunge in stock price in recent weeks. The shares will be bought back at Rs 350 per unit, which is 67 per cent higher than the closing price of Rs 209 apiece on the BSE on Thursday. Promoters will not participate in the buy-back process. In a regulatory filing, the jeweller said the board at its meeting held on Thursday considered and approved the buy-back of up to 1,21,14,286 fully paid-up equity shares of Rs 10 each.

Sensex ends FY18 with 11% gain; investors richer by Rs 20.70 trillion


The benchmark BSE Sensex slumped 206 points in a see-saw trade on Wednesday to close below the 33,000-mark in the last trading session of 2017-18, but finished the year with a gain of 11.30 %.

The broader 50-share Nifty also ended 70 points lower at 10,113.70. The Sensex has gained 3,348.18 points, or 11.30 %, in 2017-18. The index had gained 16.88 % in the previous fiscal year.

Investors saw wealth addition of Rs 20.70 trillion during 2017-18. The market capitalisation of all firms listed on the BSE was at Rs 142.24 trillion against Rs 121.54 trillion as on March 31, 2017.

The broader Nifty closed the fiscal year with gains of 939.95 points, or 10.25 %. During the previous year, it scored gains of 1,435.55 points or 18.55 %.

For the day, the BSE Sensex snapped its two-session winning streak to end lower by 205.71 points, or 0.62 % at 32,968.68. Intra-day, it hovered between 33,104.11 and 32,917.66. The gauge had rallied 577.85 points in the past two sessions. The NSE Nifty, too, ended the day 70.45 points, or 0.69 % lower at 10,113.70 after shuttling between 10,158.35 and 10,096.90.

On a weekly basis, the Sensex rose 372.14 points, or 1.14 %, while the Nifty gained 115.65 points or 1.16 %. This was their first gain in five weeks.

Stock exchanges will remain closed on Thursday and Friday on account of Mahavir Jayanti and Good Friday, respectively.

Sensex ends at record high, Nifty settles over 10,550 for first time ever


Benchmark indices ended at new closing high on Friday, tracking global equity markets on the back of robust economic data.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at new closing high at 34,153, up 184 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled above 10,550 for the first time ever. It ended at 10,558, up 54 points.

Shares of telecommunication companies were in focus with the S&P BSE Telecom index rallying more than 3% on BSE, trading close to its record high.

Idea Cellular, Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications (RCom), Tejas Networks, GTL, GTL Infrastructure, Aksh Optifibre and Sterlite Technologies from the telecom index have surged up to 12% on BSE in intra-day trade.

Subros hit an all-time high of Rs 347, up 11% on BSE in intra-day deal, after the company announced that it has started supply of blower for trucks to its customers include Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland.
