Sensex tanks 461 points, Nifty below 18,300 amid global rout; all sectors fall


Selling pressure intensified in late noon deals on Friday after reports emerged of fresh Russian onslaught on Ukrainian soil. According to media reports, at least three cities in Ukraine faced major missile attack on energy facilities and infrastructure. Meanwhile, recession fears in the US and Euro region, coupled with growth slowdown concerns back home, weighed on the sentiment.

Against this backdrop, the S&P BSE Sensex dropped 461 points, or 0.75 per cent, to settle at 61,338. The Nifty50, too, slumped 146 points or 0.79 per cent to end at 18,269.

Dr Reddy’s Labs, M&M, Asian Paints, SBI, TCS, Titan, Power Grid, and Ultratech Cement fell the most among the 27 losers within the Sensex pack. Adani Ports, BPCL, Bajaj Auto, and Hero MotoCorp were the additional laggards on the Nifty.

Tata Motors, HDFC Bank, HUL, and Tata Steel were the only large-cap gainers on the benchmark indices.

Meanwhile, in the broader markets, the BSE MidCap index declined 1.4 per cent, while the BSE SmallCap index dipped 0.9 per cent.

Among sectors, the Nifty PSU Bank index sunk the most, down nearly 3 per cent. This was followd by losses in the Nifty Realty, Pharma, and Media indices, down over 1 per cent each.

Sensex sinks 389 points, Nifty below 18,500; IT, PSBs crack; HCL Tech down 7%


Bucking the global trend, domestic equity markets fell on Friday bogged down by profit booking in IT stocks, and heavyweights like Reliance Industries, L&T, and financials. The S&P BSE Sensex, which started about 100 points higher, erased gains and dropped over 700 points from the day’s high to hit a low of 61,889.

The index, eventually, closed at 62,182, down 389 points or 0.62 per cent. The Nifty50, meanwhile, breached below the 18,500-mark and ended at 18,497, down 113 points or 0.61 per cent. It hit a low of 18,410 during the day.

In the broader markets, the MidCap and SmallCap indices shed 0.45 per cent and 1 per cent, respectively.

Sectorally, defensive indices like the Nifty FMCG and Pharma held gains as they rose 0.8 per cent and 0.4 per cent. On the downside, the Nifty IT index crashed 3.16 per cent. Credit Suisse has warned of a 10 – 27 per cent valuation-led correction in tech-related stocks amid US macro headwinds.

The Nifty PSU Bank and Realty indices were other top laggards that tumbled 1.7 per cent and 1.5 per cent, respectively.

Sensex, Nifty end flat after listless trade; auto stocks rally, banks fall


Domestic benchmark indices remained listless on Friday as record high levels in indices triggered minor profit booking. The S&P BSE Sensex, which hit a new lifetime high of 62,448 earlier today, ended at 62,294, up 21 points or 0.03 per cent. The NSE Nifty50, meanwhile, ended at 18,513, up 29 points or 0.15 per cent. The index claimed new 52-week high of 18,535.

Reliance Industries, Wipro, IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, Tech M, Tata Steel, Maruti Suzuki, and M&M were the top Sensex gainers, rising between 0.5 per cent and 1.2 per cent. HDFC Life, Tata Motors, Divis Labs, Hero MotoCorp, Coal India, Eocher Motors, and BPCL were the additional gainers on the Nifty50 index.

On the downside, Nestle India, ICICI Bank, Kotak Bank, Titan, HDFC Bank, HUL, and Bajaj Finance were the top laggards, down up to 1.4 per cent. Sectorally, the Nifty Realty index added 1.2 per cent, while the Nifty FMCG index fell 0.3 per cent.

In the broader market, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices rallied 0.77 per cent, and 0.67 per cent, respectively.

Sensex, Nifty recoup losses, end flat; auto stocks dip, PB Fintech gains 8%


The key benchmark indices recouped losses, led by fresh buying in select IT and financial shares, to end Friday’s trading session on a flat note. Auto stocks skidded for the second day in a row.

The S&P BSE Sensex, which, touched a low of 61,337, eventually ended at 61,663, down 88 points. In the process, the BSE benchmark also finished the week with a marginal loss of 132 points.

The NSE Nifty 50 settled 36 points lower at 18,308 on Friday.

Among the Sensex 30 stocks, Mahindra & Mahindra slipped 2.4 per cent. NTPC, Bajaj Finance, Maruti, IndusInd Bank and Bharti Airtel were the other notable losers. On the positive side, HCL Technologies and Asian Paints finished with gains of around a per cent each.

The broader indices – BSE Midcap and Smallcap were down nearly 0.5 per cent each. The breadth too was fairly negative, with 2,048 declining stocks against 1,455 advancing shares on the BSE.

The BSE Auto index slipped 1.2 per cent and was the major sectoral loser. The Capital Goods, Oil & Gas and Energy indices were the other prominent losers.

In the broader market, shares of TCPL Packaging hit a record high at Rs 1,696, and ended with a solid gain of 15.4 per cent on healthy business outlook. The stock of the packaging company surpassed its previous high of Rs 1,540.45, touched on September 5, 2022.

Sensex leaps 1,181 points, Nifty holds 18350 amid global rally; HDFC duo up 6%


Indian equities rose in tandem with global peers after the release of US inflation data in October raised investor hopes that inflation has peaked. Barring minor downtick in the Nifty Auto, FMCG, and PSU Bank indices, all other sectoral indices advanced on the bourses. The Nifty IT index led from the front with around 4 per cent surge.

Meanwhile, HDFC twins, information technology (IT), and other heavyweighs including Reliance Industries, Tata Steel, L&T, and Bajaj twins propelled the S&P BSE Sensex to a fresh 52-week high of 61,841, while the Nifty50 touched 18,362.

The indices, eventually, ended at 61,795, and 18,350 levels, up 1,181 points and 322 points, respectively.

In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap, and the BSE SmallCap indices added 0.15 per cent, and 0.33 per cent, respectively, as against the frontline indices’ 2-per cent gain.

Sensex rises 203 points, Nifty ends near 17,800; Maruti zooms 5%, RIL 3%


After a promising start to the trading day, the key benchmark indices slipped into red for a brief moment, and then pulled back towards the close. Broader markets, however, succumbed to selling pressure on Friday.

The S&P BSE Sensex surged to a high of 60,133 in early deals, but then dipped into red to a low of 59,739. The 30-share index eventually ended 203 points higher at 59,960. In the process, the BSE benchmark ended the festive week with a gain of 1.1 per cent (650 points).

The NSE Nifty settled 50 points higher at 17,787. In the broader markets, BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices slipped around 0.5 per cent each.

Among individual stocks, Reliance up 3 per cent was primarily responsible for the day’s gain. The stock alone contributed 231 points to the BSE benchmark.

Maruti zoomed 5 per cent to Rs 9,495, after the company reported 4-fold jump in net profit, beating Street estimates.

Markets end marginally up on Friday; Sensex, Nifty down 1% in Samvat 2078


A range-bound trade ended on a flat note on Friday as weak global cues amid escalating crisis in Ukraine weighed on investor sentiment. The S&P BSE Sensex, which hit a high of 59,591 in intra-day trade, settled at 59,307, up 104 points or 0.18 per cent.

The Nifty50, meanwhile, closed at 17,576, up 12 points or 0.07 per cent, after hitting a high of 17,670 during the day.

The gains in benchmark indices were led by Axis Bank (up 9.5 per cent), HUL, ICICI Bank, Kotak Bank, SBI Life, and Apollo Hospitals. On the downside, Bajaj Finserv (down 3.4 per cent), Bajaj Finance, Divis Labs, Adan Ports, UPL, Asian Paints, and L&T capped upside.

In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices dipped 0.75 per cent and 0.6 per cent, respectively. Sectorally, The Nifty PSU Bank and Private Bank indices gained the most, up 1.8 per cent and 1.6 per cent, respectively, while the Nifty Pharma index fell 0.8 per cent.

Investors poorer by Rs 5 trillion as Sensex tanks 1,021 points; Nifty near 17,300


Investors became poorer by Rs 4.83 trillion on Friday as equity markets went into a tailspin amid fears of a global recession. The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex crashed 1,021 points, or 1.73 per cent, to close at 58,099 today, while the Nifty50 broke below 17,350 levels to end at 17,327, down 302 points or 1.72 per cent. With this, the indices have yet again turned negative for the calendar year 2022.

During the day, the Sensex had tumbled over 1,100 points, and the Nifty50 had erased nearly 350 points as they hit their respective lows of 57,982, and 17,292.

In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices underperformed the frontline indices as they declined between 2 per cent and 2.3 per cent. Overall, there were three sellers for every one buyer on Dalal Street as over 2,472 stocks fell on the BSE as against 1,000 gainers.

Sectorally, the Nifty PSU Bank index plunged 4 per cent, while the Niftyy Bank, Private Bank, and Realty indices fell 2.6 per cent each.

The Nifty IT index fell just 0.7 per cent on the NSE today after analysts said Accenture’s Q4FY22 results showed better outsourcing revenue for larger Indian IT stocks.

Shares of Tata group were in spotlight on Friday after the multinational steel-major Tata Steel announced merging all its group metal companies with itself.

Sensex ends choppy day 105 points higher; IT stocks lead; Financials weigh


Benchmark indices climbed on Friday as investors cheered US Fed chair Jerome Powell’s comment that the US may be able to avoid a “deep recession” despite aggressive rate hikes. The S&P BSE Sensex, which had erased all the morning gains during the day, clawed back to end at 59,793, up 105 points or 0.18 per cent.

The Nifty50, on the other hand, settled at 17,833, higher by 35 points or 0.19 per cent. In the broader markets, the Nifty MidCap 100 added 0.35 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap100 edged 0.06 per cent up.

Among individual stocks, Tech M, IndusInd Bank, Infosys, HCL Tech, Maruti Suzuki, SBI, and TCS were the top large-cap winners, while Astral, Godrej Industries, Bajaj Holdings and Investments, All Cargo Logistics, Nazara Technologies, and Stove Kraft were the top broader market gainers.

Sectorally, the Nifty IT index jumped the most, up 2 per cent, while the Nifty Financial Services and Realty indices dipped 0.5 per cent each.

Sensex, Nifty end flat post volatile trade; ITC up 2%; Maruti, RIL dip 1%


Equity markets remained listless on Friday, swinging occasionally between gains and losses, as lack of domestic and global cues kept investors on the sideline. The S&P BSE Sensex settled today’s session 37 points, or 0.06 per cent, higher at 58,803. The NSE Nifty50, meanwhile, shut shop at 17,539, down 3 points or 0.02 per cent.

The broader markets, however, exhibited a strong show during the end but ended mixed. The BSE MidCap index dipped 0.35 per cent while the BSE SmallCap index eked out gains of 0.04 per cent.

Among sectors, the Nifty Financial Services and FMCG indices added 0.5 per cent and 0.4 per cent, respectively, while the Nifty PSU Bank index fell 0.77 per cent.

Shares of Adani Enterprises hit a record high of Rs 3,369 after they gained 4 per cent on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in Friday’s intra-day trade. The spurt comes after the NSE announced the company’s inclusion in the benchmark Nifty 50 index.
