In a highly volatile session, the domestic equity market ended on a positive note with BSE Sensex just 40 points shy of its record high level and Nifty50 closing near its all-time high.
Sensex closed 124 points or 0.39 per cent higher at 32,020.89 while Nifty50 closed the day at 9,915.25, up 42 points or 0.42 per cent.
The 30-share pack had opened at 32,035.88 and touched an intraday high and low of 32,062.23 and 31,808.93, respectively, as index heavyweights WiproBSE 6.47 % (up 6.54 per cent) and Reliance (up 3.75 per cent) hogged the limelight.
BSE Midcap index gained 6 points or 0.04 per cent to 15,185.53 as shares of Adani Power, Bajaj Holdings and Bajaj Finserv surged up to 7 per cent.
On the other hand, BSE Small Cap index shed 7 points or 0.05 per cent to end the day at 15,992.63 as shares of Gujarat NRE Coke (down 6.55 per cent), Nucleus (down 6.07 per cent) and Dish Tv (down 5.85 per cent) capped gains.

The benchmark indices settled lower on Friday as investors booked profits in financials such as State Bank of India and auto makers such as Maruti Suzuki India. The negative trend in European and Asian markets also impacted the sentiment.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 31,138, down 152 points, while the broader Nifty50 settled at 9,574, down 55 points.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE Midcap and the S&P BSE Smallcap indices shed over 1% each.
Market breadth depicted weakness. There were more than three losers against every gainer on BSE. 1,936 shares fell and 683 shares rose. A total of 137 shares were unchanged.
For the week, both the indices logged small weekly gains on hopes the Reserve Bank of India will cut interest rates after minutes from a monetary policy committee meeting earlier this month showed one member acknowledging that inflation had eased.

Markets continued their bull run to settle at fresh closing highs on Friday with the S&P BSE Sensex scaling past the 31,000-mark and the broader Nifty50index hitting 9600-mark for the first time ever as higher derivatives rollover led to strong follow-up buying in index heavyweights on the first day of June series.
Settling at fresh closing high, the 30-share Sensex ended at 31,028, up 278 points. The index was up 1.8% for the week. On the other hand, Nifty50 also ended at new peak of 9,595, up 85 points with a weekly gain of 1.7%.
Both frontline indices peaked fresh highs at intra-day level also. The S&P BSE Sensex rallied as much as 324 points to hit its new high of 31,074 surpassing its previous peak of 30,793 reached yesterday, while the broader Nifty50 gained 95 points to touch its fresh high of 9,592, overriding the previous milestone of 9,432, hit on May 17.
Broader market outperformed benchmark indices with the S&P BSE Midcap and the S&P BSE Smallcap indices gaining 2% and 1.6% respectively.

It was a week of stock specific moves. The market ended positive for the fifth consecutive week thanks to a smart rally in stocks like TCS, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and Reliance Industries in an otherwise a holiday-truncated expiry week. Globally, low probability of US Federal Reserve hiking interest rates in US in its March policy meeting also contributed to the buoyant sentiment.
During the week ended February 10, the S&P BSE Sensex added 1.5% or 424 points to settle at 28893, while Nifty50 gained 1.3% or 118 points to close at 8939.
Midcap and Smallcap stocks also mirrored the gains in the frontline indices to rise nearly 1% each.

The benchmark indices on Friday settled the day lower as auto makers dropped on sharp decline in monthly sales and stocks of telecom service providers – Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular, Reliance Communications (RCom) – were hit by worries about intensifying competition with the extension of freebies offered by Reliance Jio (RJio) till March 2017.
Sentiment was also muted ahead of the release of the US monthly jobs data, a referendum in Italy over its constitution, and the Reserve Bank of India’s policy review next week.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 26,230, down 329 points, while the broader Nifty50 closed at 8,086, down 106 points.
