Sensex falls 664 points from day’s high, ends 49 points down; RIL up 2%, autos dip


A firm trading session witnessed an anti-climatic end with almost all the sectors giving up their gains. The Nifty Auto index was the worst hit as it shed around 1.8 per cent, while the Nifty Bank, Metal, PSU/Private Banks, and Realty indices fell up to 1 per cent each. The Nifty IT index was the only gainer, up 0.45 per cent.

Overall, the BSE Sensex index fell 664 points from the day’s high to close at 55,769, down 49 points or 0.09 per cent. The Nifty50, too, shut shop at 16,584, down 44 points or 0.26 per cent. It hit an intra-day high of 16,794.

In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices fell 1.45 per cent and 1.16 per cent, respectively.

Shares of Reliance Industries (RIL) gained 3 per cent to Rs 2,816.35 on the BSE in Friday’s intra-day trade, having rallied 7 per cent in the past two trading days amid heavy volumes. RIL has seen addition of Rs 1.25 trillion in its total market capitalisation of Rs 19.05 trillion during this period.

Sensex ends choppy day 234 points down; Nifty holds 17,150; IT, FMCG weigh


Lack of directional cues kept benchmark S&P BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 range-bound in the negative territory for better part of the day on Friday. However, the indices turned choppy and ended mildly off lows as energy prices, including crude oil futures, eased after the US and European Union signed agreement to share energy needs.

The 30-pack Sensex index had touched a low of 57,100 during the day but bounced back mildly to end at 57,362, down 233.5 points or 0.4 per cent. On NSE, the Nifty50 ended at 17,153, down 70 points or 0.4 per cent, climbing off from the day’s low of 17,0.76.

22 of the 30 Sensex stocks and 37 of the 50 Nifty50 stocks settled the day in the red. Titan Company, Tech M, Maruti Suzuki, Cipla, IOC, Nestle India, Hero MotoCorp, Eicher Motors, L&T, TCS, Wipro, and Tata Steel were the top laggards, losing upwards of a per cent each.

On the upside, Bajaj Auto, Adani Ports, SBI, Dr Reddy’s Labs, JSW Steel, Asian Paints, RIL, and SBI were the major gainers, up between 0.7 per cent and 2 per cent.

The broader markets, too, closed in the negative zone. The BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices dipped 0.3 per cent each.

Among sectors, the Nifty Realty index was the top gainer, up 1.2 per cent. On the flipside, the Nifty Consumer Durable index was the worst hit, down over 2 per cent, followed by the Nifty IT and FMCG indices, down up to 1 per cent.

Sensex adds 86 points; GNFC, JK Paper surge 12% each, auto stocks slide


Benchmark indices bucked the weak Asian trend and rose on Friday as the Assembly elections’ euphoria extended into a second day. However, developments around the Ukrainian war, commodity prices, and the US inflation data kept the markets volatile through the day.

The S&P BSE Sensex hit a high of 55,834 in early deals but eased off to end at 55,550, up 86 points or 0.15 per cent. The Nifty50, on the other hand, settled at 16,630, up 35 points or 0.2 per cent.

The breadth was well-balanced as equal number of stocks advanced and declined on both the frontline indices. The gainers included Cipla, Sun Pharma, BPCL, JSW Steel, Dr Reddy’s Labs, IOC, Power Grid, Coal India, and ITC, while the losers were Nestle India, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Consumer Products, Tata Steel, Britannia, Axis Bank, Hindalco, NTPC, Eicher Motors, and TCS.

In the broader markets, the Midcap index (up 0.45 per cent) and the Smallcap index (up 0.87 per cent) on the BSE outperformed the benchmarks.

Sectorally, the Nifty Pharma index was the best performing index, rising 2.5 per cent on the NSE. The Nifty Auto index, on the other hand, slipped 0.4 per cent.

Sensex dips for 3rd day, slips 59 points; Ambuja Cement falls 6%, HDFC up 1%


The volatile streak in the markets extended into a third straight day on Friday as investors continued to be on edge about the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended an extremely choppy day 54 points, or 0.1 per cent, lower at 57,833 levels, while the Nifty50 shut shop at 17,276, down 28 points or 0.16 per cent.

Reliance Industries, Infosys, Ultratech Cement, Bajaj Finance, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, and M&M were the major drags on the Sensex today, accounting for most of the losses. This downside was capped by gains in HDFC twins, L&T, TCS, and Axis Bank.

In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices shed 0.8 per cent each with individual stocks, including Gland Pharma, Honeywell Automation, Astral Ltd, Hindustan Media Ventures, Asian Energy Services, and Unichem Labs cracking between 4 per cent and 8 per cent.

On the sectoral front, key indices ended in the negative zone led by the Nifty Realty index (down 1.2 per cent) and the Nifty Pharma index (down 0.8 per cent). On the upside, the Nifty Bank and Financial Services indices managed to close 0.2 per cent higher each.

Sensex slips 143 points; Nifty holds 17,500; Realty, PSBs dip, metals shine


Mixed global cues kept the domestic equities volatile throughout the day on Friday as investors digested key updates from both the Bank of England and the European Central Bank. Meanwhile, Brent crude inched closer to $93 per barrel-mark, and bond yields climbed in the US and in India, which added to the nervousness in the markets.

The S&P BSE Sensex index oscillated 517 points intra-day and eventually settled 143 points lower at 58,645. The Nifty50, on the other hand, ended at 17,516, down 44 points. Both the benchmarks were down 0.24 per cent today but were up 2.5 per cent for the week.

In the broader market, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices were down 0.7 per cent and 0.45 per cent, respectively.

Sectorally, the Nifty Realty index fell 2.8 per cent on the NSE, while the Nifty PSB index dipped 1.9 per cent. On the contrary, the Nifty Metal index rose 1.2 per cent.

BSE breadth was midly negative as 1,746 stocks ended in the red as against 1,595 stocks that ended in the green. MAS Financial Services (up 15.5 per cent), Spandana Sphoorty, HG Infra, and Torrent Power were among the top gainers today. EI Hotels, Greaves Cotton, Welspun India, and Radico Khaitan, on the flipside, were the top drags.

Sensex ends 549 points down at 49,035; HCL Tech declines 4%; Tata Motors up 7%


Fresh concerns over coronavirus lockdown in China and European countries weighed on market sentiment, dragging benchmarks 1 per cent lower on Friday. That apart, concerns around the implementation of US President-elect Joe Biden’s proposed package tempered global recovery hopes.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex breached below the 49,000-mark during the intra-day trade, and hit a low of 48,795 on the BSE, plunging around 860 points from day’s high. The Nifty50, on the other hand, skid 260 points from day’s high to hit a low of 14,358. Volatility gauge, India VIX, jumped over 4 per cent today to close at 24 levels.

Sensex ended in the sea of red with 26 of the 30 constituents ending the day in the red. Tech Mahindra (down 4 per cent) was the top loser on the index, followed by losses in ONGC, HCL Tech, Asian Paints, Ultratech Cement, HUL, and NTPC, down between 2 per cent and 3.7 per cent. The index closed at 49,035 levels, down 549.5 points or 1.11 per cent.

Weightage-wise, HDFC, Reliance Industries, Infosys, ICICI Bank, and HUL dragged the index by 300 points.

On NSE, the Nifty50 index slipped below the 14,500-mark and settled at 14,433 levels, down 162 points or 1.11 per cent lower.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices settled with a cut of 1.25 per cent and 1.06 per cent, respectively.

All the sectoral indices on the NSE closed with a red tick. Nifty IT and Nifty PSU Bank index ended with 2 per cent cuts while Nifty Financial Services, FMCG, Metals, and Private bank were down 1 per cent. Nifty Bank index skid 273 points, or 0.8 per cent, and ended at 32,247.

Rate cut fails to hold up markets; Sensex dips 1,310 points from day’s high


Equity market ended Friday’s highly volatile session on a subdued note even as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in an emergency move, slashed the repo rate by a huge 75 basis points (bps) to arrest the potential downturn in the economy due to coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. In addition, the RBI imposed a moratorium on principal and interest payments for three months and told banks and non-banking finance companies that that non-payment won’t be considered as non-performing assets (NPA).

The S&P BSE Sensex closed at 29,816, down 131 points or 0.44 per cent, with Axis Bank (up 5 per cent) being the top gainer and Bajaj Finance (down 9 per cent) the worst performer. Besides Bajaj Finance, stocks that contributed the most to the Sensex’s fall were Bharti Airtel (down 6 per cent), HUL (down 3 per cent), and HDFC Bank (down 1 per cent).

NSE’s frontline index Nifty50 ended at 8,660, up 19 points or 0.22 per cent.

On a weekly basis, Sensex slipped 0.33 per cent while Nifty fell 0.97 per cent.

On the sectoral front, auto stocks slipped the most, thus snapping their three-day gaining streak. The Nifty Auto index ended around 2.5 per cent lower at 4,939 levels. On the other hand, private banks gained the most with the Nifty Private Bank index ending 1.72 per cent higher at 10,738 levels.

Volatility index India VIX eased 0.77 per cent to 70.97 levels.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index ended at 10,538, up 0.29 per cent while the S&P BSE SmallCap index ended 0.28 per cent higher at 9,497 levels.
