Indices trim losses to end flat, Nifty at 10,818; Pharma gains


The markets trimmed their day’s losses and ended flat on Friday amid weakness in their Asian peers, that wobbled on Friday as investors braced for US tariffs against China.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 35,622, up 22 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,818, up 10 points.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Pharma index ended over 2% higher led by rise in the shares of Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Cipla and Piramal Enterprises.

Shares of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) hit a new high of Rs 1,849 per share, up 3% on the BSE after the company said its board approved a proposal of buyback upto 76.19 million equity shares at price of Rs 2,100 per share through tender offer. The stock surpassed its previous high of Rs 1,840 recorded on June 14, 2018.

Manpasand Beverages was locked in lower circuit of 5% at Rs 158 on the BSE after the exchange placed shares of the company under ASM (Additional Surveillance Measure) framework effective from today, June 15, 2018. The BSE shifted Manpasand Beverages and Sai Baba Investment and Commercial Enterprises under enhanced surveillance measures where 100% margins will be applicable from June 16, 2018.

Sensex ends on Friday 19 pts down, Nifty at 10,768; Sun Pharma up 8%


Benchmark indices trimmed their morning losses and ended flat on Friday even as yields on the 10-year government bonds hit over 8% in the opening session today, first time since May 2015, but soon declined.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 35,444, down 19 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,768, down 1 points.

Among individual stocks, Sun Pharma surged over 8%, while Dr. Reddy ended nearly 5% higher on the BSE.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Pharma index rose 4.26% today led by a rise in the shares of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, Lupin and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories.

Investors also continued to react to Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) first rate hike since 2014, while maintaining a neutral stance.

Shares of Reliance Industries (RIL) have moved higher by 1.5% to Rs 986 per share, rebounding 2.6% from their intra-day low of Rs 961 on the BSE.

Shares of select public sector undertaking (PSU) banks were quoting higher for the third straight trading day ahead of Finance Minister Piyush Goyal’s meeting on Friday with the chief executives of 15 public sector banks (PSBs) in Mumbai. Dena Bank, Uco Bank and Corporation Bank were up 5% each, while Punjab National Bank (PNB), Bank of Maharashtra, Indian Overseas Bank, Andhra Bank and Allahabad Bank were up in the range of 3% to 4%. Shares of State Bank of India (SBI) however, trading 0.17% lower at Rs 269 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).

Sensex reclaims 35,000: IT, FMCG, auto, metal stocks shine in claw-back


Benchmark indices ended sharply up on Friday, triggered by corporate earnings and taking cues from global peers.

The S&P BSE Sensex hit an intra-day high of 35,065, but pared gains to end at 34,970 levels, up 256 points. The broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,692, up 75 points.

Reliance Industries (RIL) hit a record high of Rs 1,000 per share, up 2.5% on the BSE in intraday trade on the BSE, ahead of its Q4FY18 results today. The stock surpassed its previous high of Rs 990 recorded on January 23, 2018 in intra-day deal. The textiles-to-telecom conglomerate, RIL is expected to post its best-ever quarterly consolidated net profit, with the figure expected to be close to Rs 100-billion mark.

Country’s largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a record annual profit of Rs 77.21 billion for the year ended March 31, 2018, helped by a double-digit growth in volumes of cars sold. The Suzuki-promoted firm clocked a near 17 percent jump in sales revenue for the year to Rs 781 billion. Profit, however, grew by just five percent. An increase in effective tax rates and lower non-operating income due to mark-to-market impact on the invested surplus, compared to last year impacted net profit, the company said.

Shares of public sector undertaking (PSU) banks were in focus with Nifty PSU Bank index gaining 5%, its sharpest intra-day gain during past one month on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).

Sensex ends 270 points lower, Nifty below 9,850 as Infosys cracks 9%


The Sensex settled at 31,524, down 270 points, while the broader Nifty50 quoted 9,837, down 66 points at close. The BSE Midcap index settled 0.1% lower, while BSE Smallcap index shed 0.5%.

The benchmark indices snapped a three-session long winning streak, as Infosys cracked after Vishal Sikka’s resignation as MD & CEO, although rivals such as Tata Consultancy Services gained.

According to a BSE filing, Sikka will be Executive Vice-Chairman while UB Pravin Rao is the Interim-MD and CEO.

Infosys saw its sharpest decline since April 12, 2013, down 9.6% to Rs 923. In intraday trade, the stock fell as much as 13% to Rs 884.

But the domestic markets still logged their sixth weekly gain in seven, though they remained below the record highs hit on August 2.

The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was strong. On the BSE, 1,534 shares declined and 1,002 shares rose. A total of 122 shares remained unchanged.

Markets snap 4-day record closing trend, end flat; Nifty up 2% for the week


The markets ended flat, snapping 4-day record closing trend after opening at record highs after information technology heavyweight Infosys’ June quarter results beat Street estimates, while TCS, which declared its results post market hours on Thursday, was the top loser on Sensex and Nifty.

The BSE Sensex settled the day at 32,020, down 16 points while the broader Nifty50 index ended at 9,886, down 5 points

Nifty IT index was the top sectoral loser, down over 1% for the day dragged by Just Dial, TCS, Wipro and Tata Elxsi. Infosys also slipped in red, ending 0.7% down for the day after rising nearly 3% in early-morning trade.

Sensex closes above 31,000 for first time ever, up almost 2% for the week


Markets continued their bull run to settle at fresh closing highs on Friday with the S&P BSE Sensex scaling past the 31,000-mark and the broader Nifty50index hitting 9600-mark for the first time ever as higher derivatives rollover led to strong follow-up buying in index heavyweights on the first day of June series.

Settling at fresh closing high, the 30-share Sensex ended at 31,028, up 278 points. The index was up 1.8% for the week. On the other hand, Nifty50 also ended at new peak of 9,595, up 85 points with a weekly gain of 1.7%.

Both frontline indices peaked fresh highs at intra-day level also. The S&P BSE Sensex rallied as much as 324 points to hit its new high of 31,074 surpassing its previous peak of 30,793 reached yesterday, while the broader Nifty50 gained 95 points to touch its fresh high of 9,592, overriding the previous milestone of 9,432, hit on May 17.

Broader market outperformed benchmark indices with the S&P BSE Midcap and the S&P BSE Smallcap indices gaining 2% and 1.6% respectively.

Nifty ends on Friday at 9,400 ahead of inflation data, up 1% for the week


 

Benchmark indices ended lower with the Nifty settling at 9,400 as investors turned cautious ahead of inflation data and booked profits in recent outperformers.

 

Consumer price inflation (CPI) is expected to have eased to a three-month low of 3.49% in April from 3.81% the previous month, according to Reuters poll. The government will also unveil the new series of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) as well as Wholesale Price Index (WPI), with 2011-12 as the base year, later in the day.

 

Both Sensex and Nifty hit record highs of in the previous two sessions, and were up more than 1% for the week. This is a second consecutive week of gains for the indices.

 

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 30,188, down 62 points, while the broader Nifty50 settled at 9,401, down 21 points.

Markets pare some losses on Friday to end marginally lower; Nifty down 0.3% for week


Extending losses for second consecutive week, benchmark indices settled marginally lower in a volatile session as investors stayed cautious in the earnings season. Nifty50 slipped below 9,100, dragged by index heavyweights like Sun Pharma and ITC. However, RIL and HDFC Bank supported the market.

The S&P BSE Sensex settled the day at 29,365, down 57 points, while the broader Nifty50 ended at 9,119, down 17 points.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE Midcap index and the S&P BSE Smallcap index added 0.02% and 0.2%

Small and midcap stocks hit record highs, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 index climbing as much as 1.1% and the Nifty Midcap 100 index up as much as 0.6%.

Benchmark indices settle on Friday near 5-month high; HDFC Bank up 3.6%


Benchmark indices settled the day higher, gaining for the fourth straight week driven by financials even after RBI put HDFC Bank back in the FII ban list.

The Central Bank said the private bank has crossed overall limit of 74% of its paid-up capital and no further purchases of shares the bank would be allowed via exchanges for FIIs. It had allowed allowed foreign investors to resume buying in the private bank earlier.

Nifty50 rose as much as 1.3% during the early morning trade led by HDFC Bank after it gained 9.5% to a record high of Rs 1,454.

The S&P BSE Sensex settled the day at 28,469, up 167 points, while the broader Nifty50 ended at 8,822, up 44 points.

In the broader market, BSE Midcap and BSE Smallcap gained 0.5% and 0.4% respectively.
