Fag-end selling engulfed the markets on Friday as investors booked profit in banks and metal stocks. With this, the markets ended lower for the sixth straight day despite upbeat global mood.
The S&P BSE Sensex slumped 992 points from the day’s high to end at 52,794, down 137 points or 0.26 per cent. SBI was the biggest laggard on the index, down nearly 5 per cent, as the lender’s Q4 missed Street’s estimates.
NTPC, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Airtel, HDFC twins, and Bajaj twins were the other draggers.
On the NSE, the Nifty50 shut shop at 15,782, down 26 points or 0.16 per cent, after hitting an intra-day high of 16,084. Meanwhile, in the broader market, the BSE SmallCap index added over 1.3 per cent and the BSE MidCap index gained 0.6 per cent.
Sectorally, the Nifty Metal index fell 2 per cent, followed by the Nifty Bank index (down over 1 per cent). On the upside, the Nifty Auto index gained 2.5 per cent led by Tata Motors. Shares of the Tata Group company settled over 8 per cent higher as investors cheered the company’s long-term growth prospects.

Bear-hammering continued on Dalal Street for a third straight day on Wednesday as profit booking in banks and financial stocks weighed on the sentiment. The S&P BSE Sensex closed at 58,339 levels today, down 237 points or 0.4 per cent, while the NSE Nifty shut shop at 17,476, down 55 points or 0.31 per cent. In the intra-day deals, the benchmark indices had hit lows of 58,291 and 17,457 levels, respectively.
HDFC, HDFC Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Dr. Reddy’s Labs, Tata Motors, PowerGrid, Asian Paints, Bajaj Finserv, Kotak Bank, Titan, Cipla, and Eicher Motors were the top laggards on the Nifty index today, down between 1 and 2 per cent. On the upside, ONGC, Apollo Hospitals, Sun Pharma, ITC, UPL, JSW Steel, and Shree Cement added in the range of 1 to 3 per cent.
Meanwhile, in the broader market, the BSE MidCap index slipped 0.21 per cent but the BSE SmallCap index added 0.27 per cent.
Among sectors, the Nifty Private Bank index was the worst hit as it dipped 1 per cent. On the upside, the Nifty Metal index gained the most, rising 0.57 per cent.

Benchmark indices snapped their three-day losing run and settled 0.8 per cent higher on Friday. Investors heaved a sigh of relief as the Reserve Bank of India decided to keep the interest rates unchanged and maintained ‘accommodative’ stance despite liquidity unwinding by global central banks. The RBI also announced revised inflation and GDP growth forecasts in-line with market expectations. Yields on 10-year bonds, however, hit multi-year high of 7.075, inching up 2.3 per cent.
Against this backdrop, the S&P BSE Sensex climbed 571 points from the day’s low to end at 59,447, up 412 points against Thursday’s close. The NSE Nifty, too, advanced 145 points to settle at 17,784 in a broad-based rally. Both the indices had hit intra-day highs of 59,654 and 17,843, respectively.
The broader BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices rose in tandem with the frontline indices and closed 0.9 per cent higher each.
Among individual stocks, ITC ended as the top gainer as it advanced 4.7 per cent on the Sensex index. The stock of the cigarettes to fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) major has rallied 24 per cent in the past six week.
That apart, Dr Reddy’s Labs, M&M, Tata Steel, Titan, Reliance Industries, Asian Paints, Nestle India, and IndusInd Bank were the other gainers, rising upwards of 1.5 per cent each.
On the downside, only Tech M, NTPC, Maruti Suzuki, Sun Pharma, and HCL Tech were the laggards, down up to 1.2 per cent.
Sectorally, the Nifty Metal index was the biggest gainer, rising 2 per cent. Meanwhile, the Nifty IT index ended wee bit in the red.

Indian equities rose in-line with global markets as they cheered progress on ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. That apart, investors also welcomed a 25-bps rate hike by the US Federal Reserve, which was on expected lines.
The benchmark indices ended near the day’s high level at 57,864, up 1,047 points or 1.84 per cent. The Nifty50, meanwhile, zoomed 312 points or 1.84 per cent to settle at 17,287. Both the indices had hit an intra-day high of 58,096 and 17,345, respectively.
HDFC was the top index gainer today, rallying 5.4 per cent on the NSE. JSW Steel, Titan Company, SBI Life, RIL, Kotak Bank, Tata Consumer Products, Tata Steel, Nestle India, and Eicher Motors were the other notable gainers, up between 3 and 5 per cent.
Only four large-cap counters ended in the red, including Infosys, Cipla, Indian Oil, and HCL Tech. All these stocks dipped between 0.4 and 1 per cent.
In the broader market, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices added 1 per cent each.
For the week, the benchmark Sensex and Nifty indices climbed over 4 per cent while the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices zoomed 2 per cent each.
Sectorally, the Nifty Realty index advanced over 3 per cent today, ending as the top sectoral gainer for a second straight day. The Nifty Financial Services, Bank, and Metal indices edged between 2 and 2.5 per cent higher.

Benchmark indices bucked the weak Asian trend and rose on Friday as the Assembly elections’ euphoria extended into a second day. However, developments around the Ukrainian war, commodity prices, and the US inflation data kept the markets volatile through the day.
The S&P BSE Sensex hit a high of 55,834 in early deals but eased off to end at 55,550, up 86 points or 0.15 per cent. The Nifty50, on the other hand, settled at 16,630, up 35 points or 0.2 per cent.
The breadth was well-balanced as equal number of stocks advanced and declined on both the frontline indices. The gainers included Cipla, Sun Pharma, BPCL, JSW Steel, Dr Reddy’s Labs, IOC, Power Grid, Coal India, and ITC, while the losers were Nestle India, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Consumer Products, Tata Steel, Britannia, Axis Bank, Hindalco, NTPC, Eicher Motors, and TCS.
In the broader markets, the Midcap index (up 0.45 per cent) and the Smallcap index (up 0.87 per cent) on the BSE outperformed the benchmarks.
Sectorally, the Nifty Pharma index was the best performing index, rising 2.5 per cent on the NSE. The Nifty Auto index, on the other hand, slipped 0.4 per cent.

The volatile streak in the markets extended into a third straight day on Friday as investors continued to be on edge about the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended an extremely choppy day 54 points, or 0.1 per cent, lower at 57,833 levels, while the Nifty50 shut shop at 17,276, down 28 points or 0.16 per cent.
Reliance Industries, Infosys, Ultratech Cement, Bajaj Finance, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, and M&M were the major drags on the Sensex today, accounting for most of the losses. This downside was capped by gains in HDFC twins, L&T, TCS, and Axis Bank.
In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices shed 0.8 per cent each with individual stocks, including Gland Pharma, Honeywell Automation, Astral Ltd, Hindustan Media Ventures, Asian Energy Services, and Unichem Labs cracking between 4 per cent and 8 per cent.
On the sectoral front, key indices ended in the negative zone led by the Nifty Realty index (down 1.2 per cent) and the Nifty Pharma index (down 0.8 per cent). On the upside, the Nifty Bank and Financial Services indices managed to close 0.2 per cent higher each.

Mixed global cues kept the domestic equities volatile throughout the day on Friday as investors digested key updates from both the Bank of England and the European Central Bank. Meanwhile, Brent crude inched closer to $93 per barrel-mark, and bond yields climbed in the US and in India, which added to the nervousness in the markets.
The S&P BSE Sensex index oscillated 517 points intra-day and eventually settled 143 points lower at 58,645. The Nifty50, on the other hand, ended at 17,516, down 44 points. Both the benchmarks were down 0.24 per cent today but were up 2.5 per cent for the week.
In the broader market, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices were down 0.7 per cent and 0.45 per cent, respectively.
Sectorally, the Nifty Realty index fell 2.8 per cent on the NSE, while the Nifty PSB index dipped 1.9 per cent. On the contrary, the Nifty Metal index rose 1.2 per cent.
BSE breadth was midly negative as 1,746 stocks ended in the red as against 1,595 stocks that ended in the green. MAS Financial Services (up 15.5 per cent), Spandana Sphoorty, HG Infra, and Torrent Power were among the top gainers today. EI Hotels, Greaves Cotton, Welspun India, and Radico Khaitan, on the flipside, were the top drags.

Global headwinds weighed on Indian equities for fourth straight day on Friday as all sectors, barring selective FMCG counters, slid into the negative territory.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended the session with 427-points cut at 59,037 level with 10 index constituents ending the session in the green. The 30-pack index had briefly breached below the 59,000-mark intra-day and hit a low of 58,621.
On the NSE, the Nifty50 gave up the 17,650-mark to end at 17,617, down 140 points. The broader markets bled even more with both the mid and smallcap indices closing 2 per cent lower each on the BSE.
Overall, 2,329 stocks ended in the red on the BSE as against less than 1,048 stocks in the green. Fear gauge, India VIX, soared 6 per cent to end near 19-mark.
Sectorally, only the Nifty FMCG index ended in the green, up 0.36 per cent. The losses, on the oher hand, were led by the Nifty PSU Bank index, down 3 per cent. All other indices slipped between 0.5-2.4 per cent.
Bajaj Finserv, Tech M, Tata Steel, Bharti Airtel, IndusInd Bank, and Axis Bank were the top large-cap draggers while Zee Entertainment, Canara Bank, Concor, Info Edge, Sasken Technologies, Hindustan Oil Exploration, and Polycab India were the mid- and small-cap losers. All these stocks were down in the range of 2-11 per cent.

Key benchmark indices ended the record-breaking year 2021 on a high note. The Sensex and the Nifty displayed a firm trend throughout the day on the back of steady gains auto, financials, FMCG and index heavyweight Reliance Industries.
The Sensex touched a high of 58,409, and ended with a gain of 460 points at 58,254. In the process, the BSE benchmark was up 1,130 points for the week.
The 30-share index finished the calendar year with a solid gain of 22 per cent (10,503 points), after having touched a new life-time high of 62,245 on October 19, 2021.
The NSE Nifty settled 150 points higher at 17,354, and was up a whopping 24.1 per cent for 2021.
Among sectoral indices, BSE Metal and Consumer Durables indices were up over 2 per cent each. The Auto and Telecom indices gained 1.7 per cent each. The Bankex, FMCG, Oil & Gas and Realty indices also finished with gains in excess of a per cent each.
The overall breadth too was extremely positive, with 2,438 stocks advancing versus 944 declining stocks on the BSE on Friday.
Titan was the top gainer among the Sensex 30 stocks, it ended 3.5 per cent higher at Rs 2,522. UltraTech Cement and Kotak Bank were up around 2.5 per cent each. Maruti, Axis Bank, SBI, Bajaj Finserv, Hindustan Unilever, Bajaj Finance, HDFC Bank, Nestle and Sun Pharma were the other major gainers.
On the flip side, IT stocks kind-off under-performed in trades on Friday owing to selective profit-taking. Among others, NTPC slipped 2 per cent.
The broader markets outperformed the benchmark indices. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices were up 1.4 per cent and 1.2 per cent, respectively.

The key benchmark indices snapped their 3-day winning run as traders preferred to book profits following the recent smart gains, given the unpredictable news flow around the Omicron threat.
The BSE benchmark index had touched a high of 57,624 in opening trades helped positive overseas cues, but soon dipped into red and dropped to a low of 56,813 – down 810 points from the day’s high. The BSE index, thereafter, did recoup losses in intraday deals but eventually ended 191 points lower at 57,124.
In the process, the BSE Sensex ended the week with a marginal gain of 84 points.
The NSE Nifty moved in a range of 246 points, from a high of 17,156, the index tested a low of low of 16,910 and finally finished with a loss of 69 points at 17,004.
HCL Technologies was the top gainer among the Sensex 30 stocks, it gained 3 per cent at 1,265 on the back of heavy volumes amid buzz that the promoters were suppose to buyback shares from the open market at a 5 per cent premium.
