Fag-end buying lifts Sensex 114 points, Nifty above 18,100; Metal index up 4%


The key benchmark indices ended a rather listless trading session near the high’s of the day on the back of smart gains in metals and select financial shares.

The S&P BSE Sensex languished in the negative zone for the major part of the trading day, but eventually ended 114 points higher at 60,950 owing to the late buying. The NSE Nifty 50 settled with a gain of 64 points at 18,117.

Among the Sensex 30 shares, Bajaj Finserv surged 4.5 per cent to Rs 1,801. Tata Steel and UltraTech Cement vaulted 2.5 per cent each. SBI, Reliance Industries, Asian Paints and Bajaj Finance were the other major gainers.

On the other hand, Dr.Reddy’s slipped 1.5 per cent. Hindustan Unilever, Infosys and HDFC Bank were the other notable losers.

The broader market, however, ended on a mixed note. The NSE Midcap index was down 0.3 per cent, while the Smallcap index added 0.4 per cent. India VIX declined 1.8 per cent on Friday.

Sectorally, the NSE Metal index surged over 4 per cent. The PSU Bank and Media indices were up a per cent each. The Pharma index, however, slipped a per cent.

Recession fears hits equities; Sensex sinks 1,093 points, Nifty gives up 17,600


Bears prowled on Dalal Street on Friday as recession fears hammered global equities. Key indices crumbled under heavy selling pressure today with banks (especially in the public sector), auto, IT, metal, and realty stocks plunging the most on the bourses. Their respective indices on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) declined around 2-4 per cent.

At the headline level, the S&P BSE Sensex crashed 1,247 points intra-day before ending at 58,841, down 1,093 points or 1.82 per cent. The NSE Nifty50, too, sunk to a low of 17,505 before shutting shop at 17,551, down 326 points or 1.82 per cent.

The broader markets witnessed an equally brutal on-slaught with the Nifty MidCap 100 and SmallCap 100 falling in the range of 2.5 per cent to 3 per cent. Volatility index — India VIX — surged 8 per cent today to settle near 20-odd level.

Sensex, Nifty end flat post volatile trade; ITC up 2%; Maruti, RIL dip 1%


Equity markets remained listless on Friday, swinging occasionally between gains and losses, as lack of domestic and global cues kept investors on the sideline. The S&P BSE Sensex settled today’s session 37 points, or 0.06 per cent, higher at 58,803. The NSE Nifty50, meanwhile, shut shop at 17,539, down 3 points or 0.02 per cent.

The broader markets, however, exhibited a strong show during the end but ended mixed. The BSE MidCap index dipped 0.35 per cent while the BSE SmallCap index eked out gains of 0.04 per cent.

Among sectors, the Nifty Financial Services and FMCG indices added 0.5 per cent and 0.4 per cent, respectively, while the Nifty PSU Bank index fell 0.77 per cent.

Shares of Adani Enterprises hit a record high of Rs 3,369 after they gained 4 per cent on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in Friday’s intra-day trade. The spurt comes after the NSE announced the company’s inclusion in the benchmark Nifty 50 index.

Sensex adds 462 points; Nifty tad below 15,700; auto, banks gain; IT slips


Benchmark indices traded within a narrow range on Friday seeking support from firm global cues. The S&P BSE Sensex closed 462 points, or 0.88 per cent, higher at 52,728. The Nifty50, meanwhile, ended at 15,699, up 143 points or 0.92 per cent.

Auto, banking, and FMCG stocks took the centre stage today as easing commodity prices eased input cost and credit off-take pressures. M&M, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finance, Hero MotoCorp, HUL, ICICI Bank, Britannia Industries, ONGC, Shree Cement, JSW Steel, Eicher Motors, Tata Consumer Products, Hindalco, and HDFC Bank rose between 1.5 per cent and 4.4 per cent to settle as top Nifty gainers.

On the downside, Tech M, Infosys, Apollo Hospitals, TCS, NTPC, HCL Tech, and Coal India ended as top laggards.

Meanwhile, in the broader market, the Nifty MidCap and SmallCap indices advanced 1.4 per cent and 1.76 per cent, respectively.

Sensex tanks 1,017 points; Nifty holds 16,200; Bajaj Finance sinks 4%, RIL 3%


Global doom rocked Indian equities on Friday as investors fretted over longer-than-expected sticky inflation, coupled with aggressive monetary policy tightening. Tracking losses in global peers, the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex plunged 1,114 points intra-day, before settling at 54,303, down 1,017 points or 1.84 per cent.

The NSE Nifty50, meanwhile, held the 16,200-mark to close at 16,202, down 276 points or 1.68 per cent. The index had hit a low of 16,173 during the day. In the broader market, the Nifty MidCap 100 and SmallCap100 fell up to 1 per cent.

Over 35 Nifty stocks ended the session in the red with Bajaj Finance, HDFC, Kotak Bank, Hindalco, Wipro, Reliance Industries, Tech M, and Infosys falling between 2.5-4 per cent. The losses were trimmed by gains in Grasim Industries, Asian Paints, Apollo Hospitals, Divis Labs, and Dr Reddy’s Labs, that gained over 0.5 per cent each.

Sectorally, all but Nifty FMCG ended the session in the red. The losses were led by the Nifty IT, Oil & gas, Private Bank, and Financial Services indices as they fell 2 per cent each.

Sensex slips 143 points; Nifty holds 17,500; Realty, PSBs dip, metals shine


Mixed global cues kept the domestic equities volatile throughout the day on Friday as investors digested key updates from both the Bank of England and the European Central Bank. Meanwhile, Brent crude inched closer to $93 per barrel-mark, and bond yields climbed in the US and in India, which added to the nervousness in the markets.

The S&P BSE Sensex index oscillated 517 points intra-day and eventually settled 143 points lower at 58,645. The Nifty50, on the other hand, ended at 17,516, down 44 points. Both the benchmarks were down 0.24 per cent today but were up 2.5 per cent for the week.

In the broader market, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices were down 0.7 per cent and 0.45 per cent, respectively.

Sectorally, the Nifty Realty index fell 2.8 per cent on the NSE, while the Nifty PSB index dipped 1.9 per cent. On the contrary, the Nifty Metal index rose 1.2 per cent.

BSE breadth was midly negative as 1,746 stocks ended in the red as against 1,595 stocks that ended in the green. MAS Financial Services (up 15.5 per cent), Spandana Sphoorty, HG Infra, and Torrent Power were among the top gainers today. EI Hotels, Greaves Cotton, Welspun India, and Radico Khaitan, on the flipside, were the top drags.

Sensex ends 372 points lower; Paytm down 27%; Sapphire gains 4%, Escorts 10%


The key benchmark indices exhibited high volatility in trades on Thursday. The key indices witnessed wilted under severe selling pressure in the first-half of the day, before staging a partially mid-way, only to lose ground once again.

The BSE benchmark index, the Sensex, touched a high of 60,178 in early deals, and soon slipped into the negative zone. The index dropped to a low of 59,377, and eventually ended lower for the third straight trading session, down 372 points at 59,636.

In the process, the Sensex shed 1,082 points in the last three trading sessions, and was down 1.7 per cent (1,051 points) for the week. The markets will be shut for trading on Friday on account of Guru Nanak Jayanti.

The NSE Nifty declined 134 points to 17,765, and was down 1.9 per cent (338 points) for the week.

The broader indices ended with deeper cuts, the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices were down 1.5 per cent each. Among sectors, the Metal index shed 2.8 per cent, and the Auto index tumbled 2.3 per cent. All sectoral indices ended in the negative zone.

RBI’s dovish policy gives Sensex 381-points boost; RIL up 4%, IT stocks shine


The RBI’s seemingly dovish policy, with repo and reverse repo rates unchanged at 4 per cent and 3.35 per cent, respectively, bolstered bull sentiment on Dalal Street on Friday. The central bank also retained the GDP growth forecast at 9.5 per cent for the on-going fiscal year and revised CPI inflation projection downward to 5.3 per cent for the whole fiscal (from 5.7 per cent) which further supported the sentiment.

Overall, the frontline S&P BSE Sensex closed the session at 60,059 levels, up 381 points, while the Nifty50 ended at 17,895 levels, up 105 points.

Reliance Industries, which hit a record high of Rs 2,684 apiece in the intra-day trade, settled nearly 4 per cent higher and contributed nearly 2/3rd towards Sensex’s gains today. Other contributors included Infosys, TCS, L&T, HCL Tech, and ICICI Bank.

In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap index ended 0.15 per cent higher and the BSE SmallCap index added 0.92 per cent. Both the indices hit a record high of 25,956 and 29,358, respectively, earlier today.

Fag-end buying drives Sensex higher after two-day hiatus, up 55 points


Last minute buying helped benchmark indices eke out gains and close in the green one a gap of two days, with Airtel, Nestle India, TCS and ITC contributing the most to gains. Meanwhile, privtae banks, RIL and Infosys were among the top drags.

The BSE Sensex settled the volatile session on the day of weekly F&O expiry at 58,305, up 55 points while Nifty closed 4 points higher at 17,357. In the 50-pack index, 30 stocks closed in the green and 20 in the red.

Buying momentum remained high in midcap and smallcap stocks as the BSE Midcap ended up 0.56 per cent and the BSE smallcap 0.52 per cent. Both indices also hit their respective all-time highs in today’s session.

In sectoral space, Nifty Realty followed by Financial Services, Pharma and Bank were the top losers. On the other hand, Nifty Media, with a gain of 2.97 per cent was the best performing index. Nearly 20 per cent rally in Dish TV helped the media index put up a strong show. Other sectoral gainers were Metal, FMCG, IT and PSU Bank.

Sensex ends 174 points up, Nifty near 15,800; IT, pharma indices hit new peaks


Market bulls rode the global momentum on Dalal Street on Friday, hitting new lifetime highs on the way. Bond yields in the US and Euro zone fell, with German 10-year yields set for their biggest fall this year, as investors bet on ultra-lose monetary policy to stay in place.

Backed by firm global cues, the frontline S&P BSE Sensex hit an all-time-high of 52,641.5 while the broader Nifty50 index claimed 15,835.5-mark in morning deals. In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices, too, touched new peaks of 23,045 and 25,249 levels, respectively.

That said, a fag-end weakness in banking, realty, and FMCG counters dragged the markets off highs. By close, the BSE barometer was at 52,475 levels, up 174 points or 0.33 per cent while the 50-share Nifty index ended at 15,799 levels, up 62 points or 0.39 per cent.

The BSE MidCap index, on the other hand, closed 0.14 per cent up while the BSE SmallCap index ended 0.4 per cent higher.

Sectorally, the Nifty Metal index zoomed nearly 3 per cent on the NSE, followed by the Nifty IT and Pharma indices, up over 1 per cent higher each. On the downside, the Nifty Realty and PSU Bank indices slipped up to 1 per cent.
