Financial shares came to the rescue of the benchmark indices for the second straight day, as select index heavyweights weighed under selling pressure.
The BSE benchmark index, the Sensex, opened 120-odd points higher at 61,044, and rallied to a high of 61,420 on the back of fresh buying in early trades. Selling pressure re-emerged in second half of the trading session, with ITC, technology and metal stocks leading the fall. The BSE 30-share index slid to a low of 60,551 – down 869 points from the day’s high.
The Sensex eventually ended with a minor loss of 100 points at 60,822. The NSE Nifty from a high of 18,314, dropped to a low of 18,034, and finally settled 63 points lower at 18,115. The India VIX declined 1.8 per cent to 17.70.
Among sectors, the Bank Nifty rallied to a fresh all-time high at 40,587, and ended 0.7 per cent higher at 40,315. The Realty index surged 2.4 per cent to 509.75. On the flip side, the NSE Metal index tumbled over 3 per cent to 5,686. The Media index shed 2.3 per cent, while the ITC and Pharma indices were down 1.5 per cent each.
In the broader markets, the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices were down over a per cent each. The overall breadth too was fairly negative, with 1,967 declining stocks versus 1,327 advancing shares on the BSE.

The domestic equity market ended in the red on Friday amid weak global cues. The decision of Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund (MF) yesterday to wind up six of its debt schemes also eroded sentiment.
The Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI) assured investors that majority of Fixed Income Mutual Funds AUM is invested in superior credit quality securities and schemes have appropriate liquidity to ensure normal operations and hence, investors should remain invested in Mutual Funds to create wealth over the long term.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended 536 points or 1.7 per cent lower at 31,327.22 levels while the NSE’s Nifty ended at 9,154.40, down 159.5 points or 1.7 per cent.
Among individual stocks, Bajaj Finance (down 9 per cent) and IndusInd Bank (down over 6.5 per cent) were the top Sensex laggards. HDFC slipped 5 per cent and HDFC Bank ended nearly 2 per cent lower. On the other hand, Reliance Industries (up over 3 per cent) was the lead gainer.
Secorally, barring Nifty Pharma, all the other indices on the NSE ended in the red. Nifty Bank slipped 3.36 per cent to 19,587 levels while Nifty PSU Bank index declined around 4 per cent to 1,263. Nifty Financial Services index declined nearly 4 per cent to 9,432 levels.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index fell 1.77 per cent to 11,464 while the S&P BSE SmallCap index ended at 10,634, down 151.5 points or 1.4 per cent.

The domestic equity market ended with over 4 per cent gains on Thursday, in line with global peers that gained on hopes that the coronavirus pandemic was nearing its peak globally. That apart, hopes of more stimulus measures by the government also kept the investor sentiment upbeat.
The S&P BSE Sensex jumped 1,266 points or 4.23 per cent to settle at 31,160 amid heavy buying in index heavyweights such as HDFC, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries (RIL), and Maruti. NSE’s Nifty reclaimed the crucial 9,000 levels to end at 9,112, up 363 points or 4 per cent.
On a weekly basis, both Sensex and Nifty added around 13 per cent.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index ended over 3.63 per cent higher at 11,374 and the S&P BSE SmallCap index added over 3 per cent to 10,294.
On the sectoral front, all the indices on the NSE ended in the green with the Nifty Auto index jumping over 10.5 per cent to 5,569 levels. Volatility index India VIX declined over 5 per cent to 49.56 levels.
Among individual stocks, Sun Pharma regained the market-capitalisation of Rs 1 trillion after a sharp rally in its stock price. The stock ended at Rs 455.20 on the BSE, up over 4 per cent.
Shares of Cipla jumped 16 per cent at Rs 595, also its 52-week high on the BSE after the drug firm received United States Food and Drug Administration’s (USFDA) nod for the first generic Proventil HFA (albuterol sulfate) metered-dose inhaler, used for conditions such as asthma. It ended at Rs 579.50, up 13 per cent.

Indices remained buoyed on Friday, ahead of the government’s meeting with foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) and representatives from the financial sector, which was scheduled later in the day. Sentiment was further strengthened on reports that government could approach the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council to relieve the auto-industry from tax payment for three-six months along with measures to relieve real estate sector.
The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex soared 480 points intra-day to 37,807.5 level, while the Nifty50 zoomed 149 points to 11,181 mark.
At close, the Sensex settled 255 points, or 0.68 per cent, higher at 37,582 levels lifted by gains in auto and banking counters. Maruti Suzuki, Vedanta, Bajaj Finance, and HDFC Bank were the top gainers while YES Bank, Tech Mahindra, Tata Steel, and ITC were the top laggards. The broader Nifty50, too, ended at 11,110 mark, up 77 points, or 0.7 per cent.
Sectorally, metal, information technology (IT), pharma and public sector bank (PSBs) indices ended in the red while auto, private bank, realty, and FMCG scrips ended with gains. Nifty auto index was the top gainers, up 2 per cent, while Nifty metal index slipped 0.68 per cent.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE mid-cap index ended 104 points, or 0.77 per cent, higher at 13,670 level. The S&P BSE small-cap index, on the other hand, settled 125 points, or 1 per cent, higher at 12,699 level.

Domestic indices ended Friday’s choppy session in the negative territory. The markets remained range-bound, in the positive territory, for most part of the day but were dragged lower by index heavyweights like HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Larsen & Toubro, and Bajaj Finance.
The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 38,736 levels, down 87 points or 0.22 per cent. Among the gainers, YES Bank, Tata Steel, Sun Pharma and Vedanta topped the charts while ONGC, Bajaj Finance, ONGC and L&T were at the lower end of the spectrum.
The broader Nifty50 too settled with cuts. The 50-share index settled at 11,552 levels, down 30 points, or 0.26 per cent.
In the broader market, the BSE MidCap index ended 59 points, or 0.41 per cent, higher at 14,554 levels while the BSE SmallCap index closed 22 points, or 0.16 per cent, higher at 13,776 levels.
Sectorally, banking, financial services and FMCG counters were under pressure. The Nifty Bank index closed 0.37 per cent lower followed by Nifty Financial Services index, down 0.29 per cent. Among gainers, Nifty metals, pharma and realty counters were up between 0.4-0.7 per cent.

The benchmark indices ending Friday’s session at record closing highs, after investors’ optimism was boosted by Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA’s) return to power the previous day. While the gains were across the board, bank stocks and financials made the highest contribution to the indices’ rise.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended the day 623 points, or 1.6 per cent, higher at 39,435, with ICICI Bank, Larsen & Toubro, Bharti Airtel, Vedanta, and Tata Motors leading the list of gainers. Oout of the 30 BSE constituents, only Hindustan Unilever and NTPC ended the day in the red.
The broader Nifty50 index rose 187 points to settle at 11,844. About 1823 shares advanced, while 676 declined, and 150 shares remained unchanged on the NSE.
This was the benchmark indices’ biggest weekly gain in 2019.
India VIX, a measure of volatility in Nifty, slipped 40 per cent in the last two days, registering its biggest 2-day fall in five years.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index jumped 295 points, or 2 per cent, to hover at 14,945 levels, while the S&P BSE SmallCap closed at 14,670 levels, up 347 points, or 2.4 per cent.
All the Nifty sectoral indices ended the day with gains, with Nifty PSU Bank gaining the maximum 5.6 per cent, while Nifty Realty also rose 4.4 per cent.

The benchmark indices ended flat on Friday amid weakness in the rupee, which hit a new low breaching 71 per dollar mark for the first time earlier today.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 38,645, down 45 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 11,680, up 4 points.
Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Pharma index rose 2.7 per cent led by a rise in Lupin and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories. The Nifty IT index, too, settled 1.8 per cent higher led by Tech Mahindra and MindTree. However, Nifty Bank index slipped 0.15 per cent due to a fall in YES Bank’s shares.
The rupee slumped to a fresh record low of 71 against the dollar for the first time ever by falling 26 paise on persistent demand for the US currency amid rising crude prices. At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the local currency opened lower at 70.95 a dollar and slipped further to hit its lifetime low of 71 from its previous close of 70.74.
J B Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals rose 1.51% to Rs 342.20 on BSE after the company’s board of directors the buy-back of equity shares. The announcement was made during market hours today, 31 August 2018.

SBI slipped 4% after it reported a bigger-than-expected quarterly loss on Friday, as the country’s biggest lender by assets made higher provisions for treasury losses. SBI’s third consecutive quarterly net loss came in at Rs 48.76 billion ($707.28 million) for the three months to June 30, compared with a profit of Rs 20.06 billion a year ago, and a record loss of Rs 77.18 billion in the March quarter. The benchmark indices settled over 1 per cent higher on Friday after falling for two consecutive days, led by a rise in the financial stocks and a ‘normal’ monsoon forecast during August-September by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). They also rose taking cues from their Asian peers which inched higher following a tech-led rise on Wall Street.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 37,556, up 391 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 11,361, up 116 points.
Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Bank index rose 1.24 per cent led by a rise in the shares of Axis Bank, YES Bank and Punjab National Bank. The Nifty Fin Service index, too, settled 1.54 per cent higher led by Indiabulls Housing Finance and Edelweiss Financial Services.
Shares of VIP Industries have moved higher by 10% to Rs 538 per share, also their record high on the BSE, after the company reported a strong 55% year on year (yoy) jump in its consolidated net profit at Rs 634 million in June quarter (Q1FY19). The company, which is engaged in manufacturing and marketing of luggage and bags, had a profit of Rs 410 million in the same quarter year ago.

The benchmark indices settled over 1% higher on Friday after the rupee recovered from its all-time low and Asian peers staged a pullback.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 35,423, up 386 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,714, up 125 points.
Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Metal index settled 2.8% higher led by a surge in the shares of Jindal Steel & Power, NMDC and Hindalco Industries. The Nifty PSU Bank index also rose 1.35% led by IDBI Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce and Syndicate Bank.
On the BSE, the S&P BSE Midcap index rose 1.8% higher on Friday and the S&P BSE Smallcap index ended 1.9% up.
Among individual stocks, Tata Steel was the biggest gainer on S&P BSE Sensex, gaining 3.6% to settle at Rs 567.85. The market heavyweight Reliance Industries also rose 3% to end at Rs 972.95 on Friday.
The rupee, which breached the 69 per dollar mark for the first time on Thursday, recovered tracking a rebound in Asian shares and currencies. The Indian currency had on Thursday breached the 69-mark but covered lost ground to finally close at an all-time low of 68.79 with a fall of 18 paise against the US dollar due to multiple headwinds like weak global cues and concerns related to inflation and fiscal slippage.
