Sensex ends 137 pts down, Nifty at 10,458 levels; PSU banks fall


The benchmark indices ended marginally lower on Thursday afternoon amid thin trade. The S&P BSE Sensex ended the day at 34,047, down 137 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,458, down 34 points.

The markets will remain closed on Friday, March 2, 2018, on account of Holi.

Among sectoral indices, Nifty PSU Bank index fell 1.87% on Thursday led by a decline in the shares of Indian Bank, Canara Bank and Bank of India.

Venky’s (India) continued its upward march for the seventh straight trading day, hitting a new high of Rs 4,530, up 15% on the BSE in an otherwise subdued market. The stock rallied 69% from Rs 2,673 on February 20, 2018, as compared to 1.3% rise in the S&P BSE Sensex.

Fortis Healthcare was trading flat on Thursday even after the company reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 191 million for the quarter ended December 2017 against a profit of Rs 4.5 billion year-ago periods.

Sensex ends a tad above 34000, down 407 pts, Nifty falls 1%; banks drag


Benchmark indices slumped more than 1% on Friday, in line with Asian peers, as the global rout in equities returned, while lingering concerns over inflation back home weighed on the market.

Asian stocks tumbled to two-month lows after US shares plummeted again in the face of rapidly rising bond yields.

Global cues have weighed on Indian stock markets with major indexes on track for a second straight weekly fall after embarking on a record-hitting spree in January.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 34,005, down 407 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,454, down 121 points.

FDC, SpiceJet, Steel Authority of India (SAIL), Bharat Forge, Ipca Laboratories, Jet Airways and Bajaj Electricals are among 23 stocks from the S&P BSE500 index up over 10% during the current week in an otherwise weak market.

Bombay Dyeing & Manufacturing, HEG, Fortis Healthcare, Himachal Futuristic Communications (HFCL), Firstsource Solutions, Jamna Auto Industries, Greenply Industries and Shankara Building Products, too, were up more than 10%.

Sensex rises 124 points, Nifty50 ends near lifetime high


In a highly volatile session, the domestic equity market ended on a positive note with BSE Sensex just 40 points shy of its record high level and Nifty50 closing near its all-time high.

Sensex closed 124 points or 0.39 per cent higher at 32,020.89 while Nifty50 closed the day at 9,915.25, up 42 points or 0.42 per cent.

The 30-share pack had opened at 32,035.88 and touched an intraday high and low of 32,062.23 and 31,808.93, respectively, as index heavyweights WiproBSE 6.47 % (up 6.54 per cent) and Reliance (up 3.75 per cent) hogged the limelight.

BSE Midcap index gained 6 points or 0.04 per cent to 15,185.53 as shares of Adani Power, Bajaj Holdings and Bajaj Finserv surged up to 7 per cent.

On the other hand, BSE Small Cap index shed 7 points or 0.05 per cent to end the day at 15,992.63 as shares of Gujarat NRE Coke (down 6.55 per cent), Nucleus (down 6.07 per cent) and Dish Tv (down 5.85 per cent) capped gains.

Markets rebound to end marginally higher on Friday, the eve of GST


Benchmark indices rebounded to ended marginally higher after a day of subdued trading as caution ahead of the launch of a goods and services tax (GST) kept investors on edge. The indices ended the month of June in negative, first monthly loss this year, even after they rose a bit in the late afternoon deals.

The revised tax structure will kick in from midnight, marking India’s biggest tax reform since independence, unifying its $2 trillion economy and 1.3 billion people into a common market.

The S&P BSE Sensex settled the day at 30,921, up 64 points, while the broader Nifty50 was ruling at 9,521, up 17 points.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE Midcap and the S&P BSE Smallcap bucked the trend to gain 0.6% each.

Markets end at record highs; Nifty settles above 9650; Hero Moto top gainer


The benchmark indices ended at record highs on Friday, tracking upbeat trend in global markets, while back home hopes of good southwest monsoon rains also lifted sentiment.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 31,273, up 135 points, while the broader Nifty50 closed at 9,653, up 37 points.

In intraday trade, the 30-share Sensex gained as much as 195 points to touch a new high of 31,332, surpassing the previous milestone of 31,220 hit on May 29, while the broader Nifty50 rose as much as 16 points to reach a fresh high of 9,673, scaling last peak of 9,637 hit on May 29.

The broader market outperformed with the S&P BSE Midcap and the S&P BSE Smallcap indices adding 0.7% and 0.5%, respectively.

The breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was strong. On the BSE, 1,449 shares rose and 1,237 shares declined. A total of 164 shares were unchanged.

Sensex settles 267 points lower, Nifty below 9,300 on Friday as banking stocks dip



The benchmark indices settled lower on Friday as banking stocks dipped after the government notified the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2017, while a drop in crude prices dragged down oil explorers such as ONGC and Oil India.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 29,858, down 267 points, while the broader Nifty50 closed at 9,285, down 75 points. The Nifty50 index reversed course seconds after hitting its fresh all-time high of 9,367 in early trade.

India VIX, essentially a fear gauge, closed the day at 11.98, rising over 5% from the previous close.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE Midcap and S&P BSE Smallcap indices settled 1% and 0.8% lower, respectively.

Sensex ends the week below 27000, Nifty slips below 8,250; IT stocks drag on H1B woes


Equity benchmarks closed lower on Friday, with the Sensex falling more than 100 points amid consolidation as investors remained cautious ahead of quarterly earnings that will start next week with Infosys & TCS. Profit booking, further correction in technology stocks and weak European cues drove the market lower while buying in banking & financials stocks capped downside.

The 30-share BSE Sensex slipped 119.01 points to 26759.23 after hitting an intraday high of 27009.61. The 50-share NSE Nifty fell to hold on to 8300 level, down 30 points at 8243.80.

The broader markets, too, were under pressure with the BSE Midcap down 0.3 percent as about 1532 shares declined against 1185 advancing shares.

Sensex ends 105 points lower on Friday; Axis Bank slumps 6%


Benchmark indices lost ground in late trades to end lower as investors booked profits after gains in the previous session post the US Federal Reserve’s decision to keep interest rates unchanged.

The S&P BSE Sensex slipped 105 points to close at 28,668 and the Nifty50 settled 36 points lower at 8,832. Among broader markets, BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices ended up 0.1%-0.3% each. Market breadth ended weak with 1496 losers and 1166 gainers on the BSE.

Foreign institutional investors were net buyers in equities worth Rs 337 crore on Thursday, as per provisional stock exchange data.
