Last hour sell-off drags Sensex 289 pts lower; RIL, financials top losers


A selloff towards the fag end of Friday’s session dragged the benchmark indices lower after a range-bound trade for most part of the day.

Reliance Industries and banking stocks remained the top drags for the indices with the Bank Nifty dipping 1.17 per cent.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex ended 289 points, or 0.73 per cent, lower at 39,452, after touching an intra-day low of 39,363. Only five out of the 30 BSE constituents ended the day in the green, with IndusInd, Bharti Airtel, Kotak Bank, Axis Bank, and Tata Motors taking the deepest cuts.

The broader Nifty50 index tumbled 91 points to 11,823. About 808 shares advanced, 1686 shares declined, and 144 shares remained unchanged on the NSE.

On a weekly basis, both the Sensex slipped 0.5 per cent each.

All the Nifty sectoral indices ended Friday’s session with losses. Nifty Realty, down 2.1 per cent, was among the top losers, while Nifty Bank,Nifty Auto, Nifty FMCG, and Nifty Private Bank all slipped over 1 per cent.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index was down 1 per cent to 14,721, while the S&P BSE SmallCap ended the day 110 points, or 0.76 per cent, lower at 14,366.

HDFC twins, banks lift Sensex 86 pts, Nifty over 11,850 in volatile session


Benchmark indices ended Friday’s volatile session with marginal gains, lifted by HDFC twins and bank stocks amid weakness in pharma counters.

The S&P BSE Sensex rose 86 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 39,616, with IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra, State Bank of India, and ICICI Bank being the top gainers. Only 12 of the 30 BSE constituents ended the day in the green.

The broader Nifty50 index added 27 points, or 0.23 per cent, to 11,871. About 1058 shares advanced, 1390 shares declined, and 146 shares remained unchanged on the NSE.

The Nifty sectoral indices traded mixed, with Nifty Fin Service index gaining the most 0.9 per cent, while the Nifty Pharma index slipped the most 1.2 per cent.

In the broader markets, the S&P BSE MidCap index dipped 25 points, or 0.17 per cent, to 14,906, while the S&P BSE SmallCap index was down 16 points , or 0.1 per cent, to 14,657.

Sensex slips 118 pts, Nifty ends at 11,922 in volatile trade


After reclaiming the crucial 40,000 and 12,000 levels, respectively in the early deals, the benchmark indices S&P BSE Sensex and Nifty50 index turned volatile in the afternoon session.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 39,714, down 118 points while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 11,923, down 23 points.

The S&P BSE Sensex was trading 132 points or 0.33 per cent lower at 39,700 levels while the NSE’s Nifty50 index was quoting 33 points or 0.28 per cent lower at 11,913 levels. Nifty Bank saw a swing of 1,200 points during the session. Volatility index India VIX was trading over 4 per cent higher at 16.24.

Sectorally, barring IT and FMCG counters, all the indices were trading in the red with the Nifty PSU Bank index taking the hardest knock, followed by media and realty stocks. The Nifty PSU Bank index was trading nearly 2 per cent lower at 3,232.50 levels.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index was trading flat at 15,070 levels while the S&P BSE SmallCap index was ruling at 14,876, down 88 points or 0.59 per cent.

Putting rest to all speculation, the President of India on Friday released the portfolio details of new Cabinet, a day after Narendra Modi took oath as the country’s 16th Prime Minister. There were expectations that Amit Shah, a seasoned stock broker and a key architect of NDA’s victory for the second consecutive time will be handed over reigns of the Finance Ministry. This is after Arun Jaitley expressed his desire to stay away from any role in the new government citing health reasons. However, Nirmala Sitharaman has been appointed the new Finance Minister, while Amit Shah will handle the Home Ministry. Smriti Irani, who was expected to be awarded handsomely for defeating Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, has been made the Minister of Women and Child Development and Minister of Textiles.

Sensex recovers 212 points from day’s low, Nifty ends at 11643


Buying in select bluechip counters such as ITC, Maruti, ICICI Bank and Infosys helped benchmark indices to settle in the positive territory on Friday.

The S&P BSE Sensex recovered 212 points from day’s low to settle at 38,767, up 160 points or 0.41 per cent. FMCG major ITC emerged as the top gainer on the index with over 3 per cent gains while Tata Motors (down over 1 per cent) ened as the biggest loser.

The broader Nifty50 index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) settled at 11,643.45, up 47 points or 0.40 per cent, with 27 constituents advancing and 23 declining.

On a weekly basis, Sensex lost 0.24 per cent while Nifty settled with 0.19 per cent decline.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index gained 44 points or 0.29 per cent to end at 15,426 while the S&P BSE SmallCap index added 56 points or 0.37 per cent to end at 15,022.

Sectorally, all the indices ended in the green with media stocks gaining the most, followed by FMCG and auto. The Nifty Media index gained over 1 per cent to end at 2,443 level.

Sensex pares some gains, ends 269 points up, Nifty above 11,400


After surging 500 points in the intra-day trade, the S&P BSE Sensex witnessed a sharp fall at the fag-end of the session, mainly due to profit-booking to end at 38,024, up 269 points or 0.71 per cent. Financial stocks such as HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank contributed the most to the index’s gains while Reliance Industries (RIL), ITC and Hindustan Unilever (HUL) emerged as the biggest drags.

The NSE’s benchmark index Nifty50 closed above 11,400 level at 11,427, up 84 points or 0.74 per cent. The index hit a high of 11,487 levels during the day.

Both Sensex and Nifty reclaimed their crucial levels of 38,000 and 11,400 levels, respectively in the intra-day trade after a gap of six months.

On a weekly basis, Sensex gained 3.68 per cent and Nifty added 3.54 per cent.

Market breadth remained in favour of declines as out 2,860 companies traded on BSE, 1,476 declined and 1,209 advanced while 175 remained unchanged. A total of 59 securities hit their 52-week highs while 111 scrips hit their one-year lows.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index ended 83 points, or 0.55 per cent higher at 15,172, while the S&P BSE SmallCap index settled at 14,837, up 51 points or 0.34 per cent.

Banking barometer Nifty Bank, too hit a fresh record high of 29,520.70 during the day. It ended at 29,381.45, up over 1.50 per cent with 10 out of 12 constituents ending in the green.

Sensex gains 196 points, Nifty tops 10,850; PSBs jump up to 12%


Heavy buying in financials, autos, metals and pharma counters and positive global cues lifted the equity markets on Friday.

The S&P BSE Sensex added 196 points or 0.55 per cent to settle at 36,064, while the NSE’s Nifty50 index closed at 10,863.50, up 71 points or 0.66 per cent.

On a weekly basis, the 30-share index Sensex rose 0.53 per cent while Nifty gained 0.66 per cent.

Among individual stocks, shares of SBI Life Insurance climbed 5.47 per cent to Rs 612.25 on the BSE after CA Emerald Investments (“Emerald”) acquired 9 per cent stake in the company through open market on Friday. The stock made a sharp rebound after falling over 12 per cent in the early trade.

Shares of SML Isuzu were locked in upper circuit of 20 per cent at Rs 682 on the BSE after the company reported strong 33 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth in total sales at 1,282 units in February.

On the contrary, Bharti Airtel ended over 3 per cent lower at Rs 307.75 apiece on BSE after the company said its board of directors approved a fund raising plan of up to Rs 32,000 crore through a mix of rights issue and bond.

Sectorally, all the indices ended in the green, with media stocks advancing the most, followed by PSU banks and metals. The Nifty PSU Bank index ended over 2.50 per cent higher at 2,832 levels with all the 12 constituents ending in the positive territory.

In the broader market, S&P BSE MidCap index gained 184 points or over 1 per cent to settle at 14,503 while S&P BSE SmallCap surged over 2 per cent to end at 13,982.

Indices end flat, Sensex slips 27 pts; Suzlon Energy gains 31%


The benchmark indices settled flat on Friday amid a rise in automobile and metal stocks.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 35,871, down 27 points, while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,792, up 2 points.

Among sectoral indices, Nifty Auto index rose 1.5 per cent driven by gains in Motherson Sumi Systems and Tata Motors. The Nifty Metal index, too, rose 1.65 per cent led by Jindal Stainless (Hisar) and Welspun Corp.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index gained 54 points, or 0.38 per cent to 14,170, while S&P BSE SmallCap index settled at 13,518, up 104 points, or 0.77 per cent.

Shares of Reliance Nippon Life Asset Management surged 20 per cent to Rs 224 in intra-day trade, rallying 44 per cent in past two trading sessions on the BSE, after Reliance Capital decided to put its stake in the company up for grabs. The stock settled at Rs 199, up 6.3 per cent on Friday.

Suzlon Energy jumped 31 per cent to end at Rs 5.80 on the BSE. In intra-day deals, the stock had touched a high of Rs 6.15, rallying 68.5 per cent in the past two trading sessions from a level of Rs 3.65 on Wednesday,

Sensex falls 425 points, NIFTY settles at 10,944 weighed by Autos


Benchmark indices ended over 1 per cent lower on Friday, weighed by a sharp sell-off in the automobile and metal stocks.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 36,546, down 425 points or 1.15 per cent, while the broader Nifty50 index settled at 10,944, down 126 points or 1.14 per cent.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Auto index, the top loser of the day, settled 3.6 per cent lower as Tata Motors, MRF and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) lost considerable ground. Nifty Metal index ended 3.4 per cent lower with SAIL and Vedanta among the top losers.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index ended 203 points or 1.40 per cent lower at 14,328, while S&P BSE SmallCap index settled at 13,656, down 122 points or 0.89 per cent.

Senses ends 170 points lower on sell-off in Maruti, ZEEL


The frontline indices have pared their day’s gains and are trading on a flat note driven by a sharp selloff in the media stocks.

Among sectors, the Nifty Media index slipped around 10 per cent in the afternoon trade led by a sharp selloff in shares of Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEEL) and Dish TV.

In the broader market, S&P BSE MidCap index was trading  0.79 per cent or 118 points lower at 14,742, while S&P BSE SmallCap index was ruling at 14,113, down 112 points or 0.79 per cent.

Maruti Suzuki slipped nearly 9 per cent to Rs 6,420 in afternoon trade after the country’s largest passenger car maker reported a 17.26 per cent fall in its net profit at Rs 1,489.3 crore for the third quarter of FY19. The carmaker had reported PAT of Rs 1,800 crore in the year-ago quarter. On QoQ basis, the figures fell 33.5 per cent. Total revenue from operations stood at Rs 19,668.3 crore against Rs 19,283.2 crore in the year-ago period. Basic EPS (earnings per share) came in at Rs 49.30 against Rs 59.56 in the corresponding quarter previous fiscal.

Indices end flat, Nifty holds 10,900; Sun Pharma tanks 9%


Continuing with their lacklustre performance for the third straight day, the equity benchmark indices settled on a flat note on Friday. While the day witnessed solid buying in bluechips such as Reliance Industries (RIL), HCL Tech, HDFC Bank and TCS, the gains in the index were capped by drubbing in counters including Sun Pharma, Bharti Airtel and L&T.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended just 13 points higher at 36,387, while NSE’s Nifty50 index held the crucial 10,900 level to close at 10,907, up 2 points. On a weekly basis, both the indices ended 1 per cent higher.

Sectorally, barring IT, all other indices ended in the red with the pharma stocks bleeding the most. The Nifty Pharma pack lost nearly 3 per cent to end the day at 8,690.

Shares of pharma bellwether Sun Pharma crashed to their six year- low of Rs 375.40 apiece in the early trade on Friday after news reports suggested fresh whistleblower documents were sent to Sebi. The stock plunged as much as 12 per cent on BSE. The company, however, in a BSE filing clarified that it was not privy to the news reported by MoneyLife. The stock, eventually, ended nearly 9 per cent lower at Rs 390.75.
