Equity markets roiled in global sell-off as contagion effect of overnight selling in the US markets, especially bank stocks, dented sentiment. The S&P BSE Sensex crashed 671 points, or 1.12 per cent, to close at 59,135. The Nifty50, meanwhile, gave up the 17,450-mark to end at 17,413, falling 177 points or 1 per cent. These indices hit intra-day lows of 58,885, and 17,324, respectively.
Financial stocks were the worst hit today, amid near broad-based selling, with HDFC Bank (down 2.6 per cent), HDFC, SBI, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Bank, and Bajaj Finance featuring among the top 15 laggards on the Sensex. Index-wise, the Nifty PSU Bank index declined 2.2 per cent, while the Nifty Bank and Private Bank indices fell 1.8 per cent each.
Other large-cap laggards were RIL, L&T, M&M, and Asian Paints, down up to 1.5 per cent.
In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices dropped less than 1 per cent each.

The S&P BSE Sensex exhibited wild swings in trade on Friday as investors remained worried about global growth outlook. The 30-pack index gyrated in a range of 732 points intra-day, and settled 135 points, or 0.26 per cent, lower at 51,360.
The NSE Nifty50, meanwhile, closed at 15,294, down 67 points or 0.44 per cent. Bajaj twins, Coal India, JSW Steel, Apollo Hospitals, ITC, ICICI Bank, RIL, and HDFC Bank were the top Nifty gainers, rising between 0.8 per cent and 3 per cent.
On the flipside, Titan Company, Wipro, HDFC Life, Shree Cement, BPCL, Dr Reddy’s Labs, and Asian Paints were the top drags, down up to 6 per cent.
Sectorally, the Nifty Pharma index was worst hit, down over 2 per cent on the NSE, while the Nifty Bank added the most, up 0.75 per cent.
In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices underperformed the benchmarks and slipped up to 0.9 per cent.

Benchmark indices ended lower with the Nifty settling at 9,400 as investors turned cautious ahead of inflation data and booked profits in recent outperformers.
Consumer price inflation (CPI) is expected to have eased to a three-month low of 3.49% in April from 3.81% the previous month, according to Reuters poll. The government will also unveil the new series of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) as well as Wholesale Price Index (WPI), with 2011-12 as the base year, later in the day.
Both Sensex and Nifty hit record highs of in the previous two sessions, and were up more than 1% for the week. This is a second consecutive week of gains for the indices.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 30,188, down 62 points, while the broader Nifty50 settled at 9,401, down 21 points.
