Benchmark indices, which seemed to be recovering from morning losses, lost ground yet again in the fag-end of the session as investors dumped stocks across the board. Sentiment remained tepid throughout the day after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said overnight that a half-percentage point rate hike is “on the table” for next month.
While Bank, Financial Services, Pharma, and Metal indices were the worst hit (down around 2 per cent each), Auto, FMCG, and IT indices were the least hit sectors, down 0.6 per cent each.
Overall, the S&P BSE Sensex index shed 714.5 points to end at 57,197, and the Nifty50 index tumbled 221 points to shut shop at 17,172. Both the indices hit intra-day lows of 57,135 and 17,149, respectively.
In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap index and Smallcap index slipped 0.7 per cent and 0.4 per cent, respectively.
Meanwhile, in the money market, 10-year government bond yield hardened by 0.46 percent to hit 7.17 per cent-mark in India. Globally, the 5-year US Treasury yield topped the 3 per cent-mark in early deals.

Bear-hammering continued on Dalal Street for a third straight day on Wednesday as profit booking in banks and financial stocks weighed on the sentiment. The S&P BSE Sensex closed at 58,339 levels today, down 237 points or 0.4 per cent, while the NSE Nifty shut shop at 17,476, down 55 points or 0.31 per cent. In the intra-day deals, the benchmark indices had hit lows of 58,291 and 17,457 levels, respectively.
HDFC, HDFC Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Dr. Reddy’s Labs, Tata Motors, PowerGrid, Asian Paints, Bajaj Finserv, Kotak Bank, Titan, Cipla, and Eicher Motors were the top laggards on the Nifty index today, down between 1 and 2 per cent. On the upside, ONGC, Apollo Hospitals, Sun Pharma, ITC, UPL, JSW Steel, and Shree Cement added in the range of 1 to 3 per cent.
Meanwhile, in the broader market, the BSE MidCap index slipped 0.21 per cent but the BSE SmallCap index added 0.27 per cent.
Among sectors, the Nifty Private Bank index was the worst hit as it dipped 1 per cent. On the upside, the Nifty Metal index gained the most, rising 0.57 per cent.

Benchmark indices snapped their three-day losing run and settled 0.8 per cent higher on Friday. Investors heaved a sigh of relief as the Reserve Bank of India decided to keep the interest rates unchanged and maintained ‘accommodative’ stance despite liquidity unwinding by global central banks. The RBI also announced revised inflation and GDP growth forecasts in-line with market expectations. Yields on 10-year bonds, however, hit multi-year high of 7.075, inching up 2.3 per cent.
Against this backdrop, the S&P BSE Sensex climbed 571 points from the day’s low to end at 59,447, up 412 points against Thursday’s close. The NSE Nifty, too, advanced 145 points to settle at 17,784 in a broad-based rally. Both the indices had hit intra-day highs of 59,654 and 17,843, respectively.
The broader BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices rose in tandem with the frontline indices and closed 0.9 per cent higher each.
Among individual stocks, ITC ended as the top gainer as it advanced 4.7 per cent on the Sensex index. The stock of the cigarettes to fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) major has rallied 24 per cent in the past six week.
That apart, Dr Reddy’s Labs, M&M, Tata Steel, Titan, Reliance Industries, Asian Paints, Nestle India, and IndusInd Bank were the other gainers, rising upwards of 1.5 per cent each.
On the downside, only Tech M, NTPC, Maruti Suzuki, Sun Pharma, and HCL Tech were the laggards, down up to 1.2 per cent.
Sectorally, the Nifty Metal index was the biggest gainer, rising 2 per cent. Meanwhile, the Nifty IT index ended wee bit in the red.

It was a one-way rally on Dalal Street on Friday as investors started the first day of the new financial year (FY23) with across-the-board buying. The frontline S&P BSE Sensex zoomed 708 points, or 1.2 per cent, to settle at 59,277. The Nifty50, meanwhile, soared 206 points or 1.2 per cent to end at 17,670.
The broader indices, too, advanced in-line with large-caps with the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices climbing 1.4 per cent and 1.7 per cent, respectively.
NTPC, PowerGrid, IndusInd Bank, SBI, HDFC, M&M, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, Wipro, Axis Bank, Maruti Suzuki, and ITC were the biggest Sensex gainers, surging in the range of 1.5 per cent to 6 per cent.
On the downside, only Tech M, Dr Reddy’s Labs, Sun Pharma, Titan, and Infosys were the drags, down up to 0.7 per cent.
In the broader market space, Adani Power, BHEL, Bajaj Holdings, RBL Bank, SML Isuzu, Sahyadri Industries, Mrs Bectors Foods, and Spandana Sphoorty leaped between 5 per cent and 10 per cent.
Sectorally, the Nifty PSU Bank index jumped 4 per cent on the bourses with Union Bank, Bank of India, Canara Bank, and Bank of Maharashtra adding over 4 per cent each.
The Nifty Bank, Private Bank, Media, Financial Services, Realty, and FMCG indices, meanwhile, added between 1.5 per cent and 2 per cent.

Lack of directional cues kept benchmark S&P BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 range-bound in the negative territory for better part of the day on Friday. However, the indices turned choppy and ended mildly off lows as energy prices, including crude oil futures, eased after the US and European Union signed agreement to share energy needs.
The 30-pack Sensex index had touched a low of 57,100 during the day but bounced back mildly to end at 57,362, down 233.5 points or 0.4 per cent. On NSE, the Nifty50 ended at 17,153, down 70 points or 0.4 per cent, climbing off from the day’s low of 17,0.76.
22 of the 30 Sensex stocks and 37 of the 50 Nifty50 stocks settled the day in the red. Titan Company, Tech M, Maruti Suzuki, Cipla, IOC, Nestle India, Hero MotoCorp, Eicher Motors, L&T, TCS, Wipro, and Tata Steel were the top laggards, losing upwards of a per cent each.
On the upside, Bajaj Auto, Adani Ports, SBI, Dr Reddy’s Labs, JSW Steel, Asian Paints, RIL, and SBI were the major gainers, up between 0.7 per cent and 2 per cent.
The broader markets, too, closed in the negative zone. The BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices dipped 0.3 per cent each.
Among sectors, the Nifty Realty index was the top gainer, up 1.2 per cent. On the flipside, the Nifty Consumer Durable index was the worst hit, down over 2 per cent, followed by the Nifty IT and FMCG indices, down up to 1 per cent.

Indian equities rose in-line with global markets as they cheered progress on ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. That apart, investors also welcomed a 25-bps rate hike by the US Federal Reserve, which was on expected lines.
The benchmark indices ended near the day’s high level at 57,864, up 1,047 points or 1.84 per cent. The Nifty50, meanwhile, zoomed 312 points or 1.84 per cent to settle at 17,287. Both the indices had hit an intra-day high of 58,096 and 17,345, respectively.
HDFC was the top index gainer today, rallying 5.4 per cent on the NSE. JSW Steel, Titan Company, SBI Life, RIL, Kotak Bank, Tata Consumer Products, Tata Steel, Nestle India, and Eicher Motors were the other notable gainers, up between 3 and 5 per cent.
Only four large-cap counters ended in the red, including Infosys, Cipla, Indian Oil, and HCL Tech. All these stocks dipped between 0.4 and 1 per cent.
In the broader market, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices added 1 per cent each.
For the week, the benchmark Sensex and Nifty indices climbed over 4 per cent while the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices zoomed 2 per cent each.
Sectorally, the Nifty Realty index advanced over 3 per cent today, ending as the top sectoral gainer for a second straight day. The Nifty Financial Services, Bank, and Metal indices edged between 2 and 2.5 per cent higher.

Benchmark indices bucked the weak Asian trend and rose on Friday as the Assembly elections’ euphoria extended into a second day. However, developments around the Ukrainian war, commodity prices, and the US inflation data kept the markets volatile through the day.
The S&P BSE Sensex hit a high of 55,834 in early deals but eased off to end at 55,550, up 86 points or 0.15 per cent. The Nifty50, on the other hand, settled at 16,630, up 35 points or 0.2 per cent.
The breadth was well-balanced as equal number of stocks advanced and declined on both the frontline indices. The gainers included Cipla, Sun Pharma, BPCL, JSW Steel, Dr Reddy’s Labs, IOC, Power Grid, Coal India, and ITC, while the losers were Nestle India, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Consumer Products, Tata Steel, Britannia, Axis Bank, Hindalco, NTPC, Eicher Motors, and TCS.
In the broader markets, the Midcap index (up 0.45 per cent) and the Smallcap index (up 0.87 per cent) on the BSE outperformed the benchmarks.
Sectorally, the Nifty Pharma index was the best performing index, rising 2.5 per cent on the NSE. The Nifty Auto index, on the other hand, slipped 0.4 per cent.

Equity markets see-sawed in trade on Friday as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine escalated, with Russian forces attacking and seizing control over Europe’s largest nuclear power plant earlier today.
The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex opened with a 450-point cut and extended the losses to hit a low of 53,888, down 1,215 points intra-day. It, however, recovered partially and closed 769 points, or 1.4 per cent, down at 54,334.
The NSE Nifty, on the other hand, hit an intra-day low of 16,134 but recouped losses to end at 16,243, down 255 points or 1.5 per cent.
Maruti Suzuki tumbled another 4.7 per cent today, falling over 10 per cent in two days. The stock was the second biggest laggard on the Nifty50 index. Titan Company, Hero MotoCorp, Asian Paints, Tata Motors, HUL, Coal India, M&M, Hindalco, JSW Steel, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finance, and Eicher Motors were the other draggers, cracking between 3 and 5 per cent.
On the upside, Dr Reddy’s Labs, ITC, Tech M, BPCL, Sun Pharma, Ultratech Cement, and Wipro gained in the range of 1 to 3 per cent.
In the broader market, the BSE MidCap index declined 2.3 per cent with individual stocks such as Vodafone Idea, IRCTC, Jubilant Food, Info Edge, Zee Entertainment, Varun Beverages, and Indian Hotel falling up to 7 per cent.
The BSE SmallCap index, meanwhile, settled 1.3 per cent lower dragged by Power India, Vadilal Industries, MCX, Carborundum Universal, and KBC Global.
Sectorally, only the Nifty IT index eked out gain on the NSE, rising 0.14 per cent. The Nifty Auto index was the worst hit index today for a second straight day as it ended 3.3 per cent down today. All other remaining indices fell between 1 and 3 per cent.

Equities clocked a resounding comeback on the bourses as investors rushed to bargain buying at lower level on Friday. After a nearly 5-per cent fall on Thursday, benchmark indices jumped 2.4 per cent amid a broad-based buying. Volatility gauge, India VIX, cooled off 16.4 per cent to 26.7 levels.
The frontline BSE Sensex settled a range-bound trade 1,329 points higher at 55,858.5 with Tata Steel, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finance, NTPC, Tech M, Axis Bank, Kotak Bank and TCS ending as top gainers on the index. The stocks zoomed between 3.5 per cent and 6.5 per cent.
On the NSE, the 50 share index rose 410 points to end at 16,658. Britannia, Nestle India, and HUL were the only losers on the index, down 0.5 per cent, 0.2 per cent, and 0.01 per cent, respectively.
Meanwhile, in the broader markets, the MidCap and Smallcap indices on the BSe outperformed the benchmarks and closed a little over 4 per cent higher each.
Sectorally, the Nifty Realty and PSB indices logged the sharpest rebound today with 5 per cent gain each on the NSE. This was followed by the Nifty Private Bank index (4 per cent), Nifty Bank index (3.5 per cent), and the Nifty Pharma, Auto, and Financial Services indices (3 per cent each).

Indian benchmarks cracked in line with global peers, falling 1.3 per cent on Friday, as multi-decade high inflation in the US jolted investor confidence who feared bulkier rate hikes by the world’s biggest economy.
The S&P BSE Sensex plunged 773 points to end at 58,153 and the Nifty50 closed slumped 231 points to close at 17,375. With this, the indices halted their three-day winning streak, slipping 0.8 per cent for the week.
In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices shed about 2 per cent each, clocking weekly losses of up to 3.4 per cent.
Given the situation of rate hike in the US, all the sectoral indices settled in the negative territory today with technology and public sector banks being the worst hit. The IT and PSB indices dropped nearly 3 per cent and 2 per cent, respectively, while Bank, Financial Services, and Realty indices slipped upwards of 1 per cent on the NSE.
