The benchmark indices on Friday settled lower as investors booked profits in index heavyweights such as ITC and HDFC ahead of a long weekend, but posted their biggest weekly gain in six weeks.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 29,918 down 111 points, while the broader Nifty50 closed at 9,304, down 38 points.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE Midcap and S&P BSE Smallcap indices outperformed to gain 0.2% and 0.6%, respectively.
The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, turned negative from positive. On BSE, 1,479 shares fell and 1,386 shares rose. A total of 136 shares were unchanged.
Nifty Realty index (down 1.7%) was the leading sectoral loser, led by losses in Prestige (down 4%) and Delta Corp (down 4%) and Indiabulls Real Estate (down 3%).
The Nifty Bank pared entire intraday losses to settle 0.1% higher.

Extending losses for second consecutive week, benchmark indices settled marginally lower in a volatile session as investors stayed cautious in the earnings season. Nifty50 slipped below 9,100, dragged by index heavyweights like Sun Pharma and ITC. However, RIL and HDFC Bank supported the market.

The benchmark indices on Thursday settled the holiday-truncated week lower after index heavyweight Infosys’ revenue guidance and plan to distribute cash to shareholders fell short of expectations, raising concerns at the start of the March quarter earnings.
The geopolitical worries, after the United States launched cruise missiles against an air base in Syria last week and fears of a new weapons test by North Korea, also contributed to the losses.
Investors also took cues from the index of industrial production (IIP) data, which contracted in February and consumer price index (CPI)-based inflation data, which edged up in March.
The S&P BSE Sensex settled at 29,461, down 182 points, while the broader Nifty50 ended at 9,150, down 53 points. For the week, the Sensex shed 245 points or 0.8%, while the Nifty slipped 47 points or 0.5%.
The benchmark indices on Friday extended losses to end lower as global markets dipped after the United States launched cruise missiles against an airbase in Syria, while back home expectations of no further rate cuts this year by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) also impacted the sentiment.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 29,706, down 221 points, while the broader Nifty50 settled at 9,198, down 64 points.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE Midcap and the S&P BSE Smallcap indices pared all intraday gains to end 0.3% and 0.5% lower.
The breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, turned negative. On the BSE, 1,620 shares declined and 1,293 shares rose. A total of 129 shares were unchanged.

The benchmark Nifty50 pared all its initial losses to settle the first day of the April F&O series flat as investors booked profits in recent outperformers.
However, the index along with S&P BSE Sensex logged their third straight month of gains fuelled by Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP)’s crucial victory in Uttar Pradesh and big foreign inflows in the markets to the tune of over Rs 30,000 crore so far this month.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 29,620, down 27 points, while the broader Nifty50 remained unchanged at 9,173. The last time the 50-share index closed unchanged on October 27, 2016 at 8615.25 level.
The broader market outperformed with the S&P BSE Midcap (up 0.8%) and S&P BSE Smallcap (up 0.7%) hitting their fresh lifetime highs for the second day in a row.
The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was strong. On BSE, 1,620 shares rose and 1,121 shares fell. A total of 232 shares were unchanged.

Benchmark indices settled the day flat and posted small weekly gains as investors stayed cautious ahead of assembly election results. Exit polls declared yesterday showed BJP ahead of other rival parties in all the five states.
Victory for BJP in Uttar Pradesh will boost PM Narendra Modi’s chances of winning the 2019 general election. It would also give the party more number of legislators in the Rajya Sabha where it doesn’t have a majority, improving the government’s chances of passing key reform bills.
The 30-share Sensex ended 17 points higher at 28,946, while the 50-share Nifty settled the day at 8,934, up 7 points.
In the broader market, the BSE Midcap was down 0.2%, while BSE Smallcap fell 0.1%.
The market on Friday extended fall for the second straight session as investors booked profits after a sharp rally that lifted the benchmark indices to near two-year highs in the previous session.
The negative trade in Asian markets, which slipped on expectations of a US interest rate hike in March, also weighed on sentiment.
